Lestat, the prince of all vampires, now confirmed for people of Walmart.com

Response to this inspiring post by @luthi69

@luthiluthi!

Okay but this is particularly hilarious to me because this is exactly the kind of thing Lestat canonically drags Louis for doing. Like when they get into one of their big fights in IWtV and Lestat snarks about Louis “staring for hours at candles as if they were people and standing in the rain like a zombie until your clothes are drenched and you smell like old wardrobe trunks in attics and have the look of a baffled idiot at the zoo.”

… And meanwhile he’s over here getting mesmerized by a freakin’ Wal-Mart. He’s such an absolute hypocrite and I kind of find it hilarious. Like OK Lestat, maybe Louis stares at candles like they’re people, but at least it’s more poetic than being “spellbound” by the dang aspirin bottles.

#also this art is AMAZING bless you OP #the vampire chronicles #anne rice #gorgeous art #awesome fanart #lestat de lioncourt #interview with the vampire #the tale of the body thief #funny #hilarious! #like in fairness I absolutely get why someone from 18th century France would be awe-struck by being in a Wal-Mart #even before you bring his super-intense vampire senses into the equation #but like if Lestat’s gonna dish it out at Louis that way he absolutely deserves to have it thrown back at him #that’s just how it is 😛

^^^Excellent points & tags @luanna801!

Hi sorry me again. What are your thoughts on the weird casting choice of Antonio Banderas for Armand in IWTV¿¿? Have you considered….A meme of it!? D:

(@luthi69 beat me to the punch on that one!)

I admit that I have a lot of nostalgia for Antonio!Armand, so it doesn’t seem as weird to me… I hope the new adaptation(s) have a more canon-compliant Armand bc I think it can be handled in a way that wasn’t possible in the early 90′s, the pedophilia inherent in an adult-looking vampire being in a relationship (of some kind) with a teenage-looking vampire, even though they are ~90 and ~400 years old, respectively.

There were a lot of good reasons for casting a non-compliant Armand, and I talk about it in my #Defending Antonio tag, @vraik captured the taboo aspect of it very well [X]:

HEY. HEY. YOU KNOW WHO I LOVE?

Antonio Banderas Armand.

I ranted about this at length once, and realized it might be worth excising that particular section from my recaps and letting it stand on its own. SO LET ME TELL YOU A THING.

“Not only does Banderas give one hell of a performance, clearly entranced by Louis and convinced his ruthlessness is an acceptable means to an end (and then Louis dumps him immediately and Banderas’ crushed look that WHOOPS OVERESTIMATED just destroyed me). It’s really genuine, maybe the movie’s best after Cruise and Dunst, and at least half his dialogue is lifted without change from the books. But all that gets overlooked, because he doesn’t look like a teenager. And there’s a certain fairness to that – Armand’s body adds a dimension to his interactions with others as much as Claudia’s does. But now let me give you a hot dose of context.

In 1994, it was still a pretty common argument to conflate homosexuality with pedophilia, particularly with gay men.  THINK OF THE CHILDREN, Y’ALL. The movie already had to deal with the Claudia/Louis relationship, which only tenuously steps the worst landmines of creepiness, as we discussed, by avoiding physicality and giving mentally grown Claudia all the power. So, the filmmakers maybe didn’t want to stack, on top of that stack of gunpowder, a relationship with yet another underage character, particularly one that so played into existing stereotypes.

Then there’s the fact that, by virtue of the script, Louis’ feelings for Armand are a lot more explicitly tender and obvious than his relationship with Lestat. Back then, it was a big deal if you asked an actor to, gasp, play gay. Heavens forfend. But Banderas, in addition to being a handsome fellow and a marketable star, had also appeared in Philadelphia in 1993 (aka the movie where the Noble Gay dying nobly from AIDS is nice enough to teach A Straight to be a better person before he croaks). While their scenes were scrubbed of basically any intimacy, he was playing Tom Hanks’ lover, and apparently that was proximal enough to The Gay that he was an okay dude to ask. And then he fucking killed it with the material he was given it, in spite of the fact that the majority of his scenes were opposite the totally catatonic Pitt (who has made no bones about how much he haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaated being in this movie). He’s a champ, and a treasure, come at me.”

I have a guilty pleasure watching cinema sins on youtube at 4am when I have nothing else to do with my life. I recently messaged him and asked if he would do an “everything wrong with: iwtv” and he just said he would “definitely look into it!” So I am pretty hyped right now and hopefully we might get a really funny iwtv cinema sins video in the future….

But there was so much that was good about movie!IWTV!… I know I know, it’s fun to poke fun at it regardless… movie!QOTD was much more cinema sinful. IWTV’s greatest sin was Antonio!Armand but c’mon, ppl who didn’t read the books didn’t know that…

I could go on. But I haven’t lost it as much as Anne.

Well it wouldn’t be all that wrong, he can fly, and he causes widespread destruction wherever he lands… broken hearts at the very least…

is it a thing that people don’t like movie armond?

ARMAND.

Antonio Banderas is one of the fandom’s punching bags re: being cast as Armand in that movie, when that character is in fact described as being around 15-16 yrs old, w/ auburn hair, who looks more like a Botticelli angel than a real person. Alot of Armand fans are more than hopeful that the actor cast as Armand in the new adaptation will be more accurate to canon.

I initially felt the same way about movie!IWTV’s Banderas!Armand, that he was so very wrong. But then I considered it further and came up w/ a lot of reasons (#Defending Antonio) to justify that casting, so you can give my reasons a chance or not if you’d rather join in the fun of beating this dead horse bc I know I have my own dead horses to beat, so have at it!

Hi! :) you don’t have to answer of course, but I was wondering.. I saw someone in an old conversation mentioning that Anne meant for Armand to be an unlikeable villain and was disappointed that people liked him, but I can’t for the life of me find the source. Do you have any clue? Have a wonderful year by the way, it’s already 2016 in my timezone so I wish it brings you everything great you could hope for!

I have never seen a post or heard smne mention anything like this… that would damn or save my soul, and as far as I know, after 20+ yrs in our fandom, I am one of the – oldest – living – members of it on tumblr! <— d’ya see what I did there? bwah so damaged…

So I’ll answer by opening it up to the group, has anyone heard of this? Could be legit.

[meme by @vampchronfic, this was the most appropriate pic I could think to add]

Oh and thanks for the lovely wishes from the future! If the end of ‘15 is any indication, Sweet ‘16 is looking like it’s gonna start out a fine year indeeeed.

When I read this it kind of ringed a bell, but I guess the bell must have been underwater because I found quite the opposite in The Vampire Companion

For the “meant to be an unlikable villain” I only found that he was supposed to be evil enough for Akasha’s dreams but really wasn’t lol

image

And from the way she is “disappointed that people liked him”, I actually found quite the contrary…

Went back to the facebook archives to find out if maybe Anne had said something more akin to what you mentioned, but I couldn’t find anything there, or in the several written interviews I found in the bowels of the internet.

Hope this helps…? And yes, I kinda am defending my stale cinnamon roll.
Oh, and Happy New Year, Anon & @i-want-my-iwtv 😀

Thanks again @luthi69 for digging up this info! omg I get to use this ancient thing…

I am a bad fangirl, I own a copy of the Vampire Companion and have not memorized it with the detail I have absorbed canon… another item I’d like to do this year.
Can you guys imagine what AR had in mind for Armand in QotD (does anyone else here not like AR’s abbreviations for the books?) if she wanted him to play a central factor in the plot?

I think it also says something about the power of Daniel. What AR was doing with Armand/Daniel overrode whatever her initial plans for Armand were, his feelings for Daniel basically outshone whatever evil AR was gonna have him do! And that makes their ship that much more powerful and precious in that story, don’t you think?
