Anne Rice Facebook livestream breakdown

firelight-fading:

Today, Anne Rice had two livestreams on Facebook, the first as a general Q&A and the second specifically related to the Vampire Chronicles television show. Part way through the second livestream, the video glitched and I missed a minute or two, but overall this is what I had.

I’ve divided the information into 3 sections and highlighted the most important or interesting things she mentioned in my opinion):

Anne Herself

  • Anne wants to assure fans she is the ONLY one who answers and sees emails sent by fans. She tries hard to view all of them
  • She also reassures that shes been trying to read as many comments given on Facebook as possible and to consider them
  • In her writing process, she can’t do all-nighters anymore; her books about Christ were the last time she really did this
  • She
loves how people in New Orleans love life and celebrate it. She misses
New Orleans terribly. She notes, ā€œLifestyles [down there] are inherited and have a
    beautyā€
  • She reads more non-fiction than fiction and constantly
takes notes from them, especially about archeology (which she loves:
ā€œIt’s like eating ice cream for me! I love it so muchā€)
  • She
says she no longer identifies as a Christian, but still has a love for
Jesus and what he has done for her, such as helping her solve problems and beyond that
  • She has some new announcement coming soon not concerning the vampires
  • She feels this is the age of the nerd where
readers’ opinions are most important. Says she has always taken us the readers seriously and wants us to feel appreciated. She appreciates our
power and what we have done for the series.

The Books and The Characters

  • *spoiler* There is NO certainty Mona and Quinn are dead. This is just what Lestat believes.
  • She went through the pronunciations of characters’ names
    • Marius is pronounced like Marius in Les Miserables
    • Mekare is May-care-ee, but thinks other pronunciations are beautiful too
      • (And I think as a fandom we’ve come to agreements on everyone else’s names. She went by the names fast!)
  • Anne says she sums up the story of the chronicles as ā€œhow badly Lestat wants to be the hero of his own lifeā€
  • She appreciates fans pointing out mistakes in her writing since she wants to be as accurate as possible, especially when it comes to history/time periods
  • When
asked about the taste of blood/how it functions, Anne says blood is
like every kind of drug- it’s sex, alcohol, drugs, everything
  • She
writes a TON of notes since she occasionally forgets when/how certain
things are mentioned, such as how the Savage Garden was introduced in
the novel (which she no knows as something that occurred during Our Conversation with Nicolas and Lestat)
  • The name ā€œTalamascaā€ came from a book on old witchcraft she found
  • Lestat’s
name was a ā€œblunderā€ rather than a ā€œeurekaā€ moment. His name was NOT
based on her husband Stan intentionally. She was trying to look up old
    french names.
  • The transformation process of human to vampire (after getting the Dark Gift) is a little slower than how the IWTV film portrayed, but close in Anne’s mind (she truly appreciated how the film went above to stay close to her own visions and her work)
  • During his time with Louis and Claudia, Lestat attempted to give answers
that would ā€œkeep them aliveā€ rather than actual answers, knowing that he
couldn’t reveal what he knew due to what Marius had told him
(essentially, not just answers that he thought would satisfy them but that he thought would carry them on by themselves…which worked in my opinion)
  • There were several questions
about Gabrielle and Becket commented about how Gabrielle is a fan favorite before he introduced the questions:
    • Anne says Gabrielle is cold, but admits that she loves Lestat yet at the same time doesn’t need him.
    • She does not see Gabrielle as
autistic (she laughed at this question which really irked me :/ )
    • She will not write about a memoir from Gabrielle’s point of view since
she wants Lestat to stay the focus of ā€œthe tribeā€ and she’s done with
writing those sort of side books.
  • Lestat’s main concern right now is ā€œkeeping the tribe togetherā€
  • She wants to continue with exploring some of the newer characters, Fareed and Seth were mentioned as a part of this.
  • Anne
has an ā€œambivalenceā€ towards Louis and she loves him since he
represents an old part of her, but this is also the same reason she has
trouble going back and writing for him, because she feels she is now a different person
  • She
appreciates that there is no ā€œrealā€ consensus on what is the best/worst
of her books amongst the fans (though Memnoch was her first example for
    worse soooo šŸ˜)
  • In some ways, how Amel speaks to Lestat is a metaphor for how Lestat speaks to Anne.

The Television Show

(Casting)

  • Armand will NOT be played by someone around 14, because of the long filming process and how it will age the actor. She acknowledges fans want someone young for Armand but feels it
will be too difficult to use
    (um, hello Anne, CGI??)

  • She thinks Cate Blanchett would be a wonderful pick for Gabrielle.
  • Says
the looks are most important for Lestat, Louis just has to be beautiful
    (lol)
  • She really cares about the appearances of the cast and their availability to do about 5-6 years of filming

(Chronology and Production)

  • She
thinks she will not go through network tv, so the home to the show would be Amazon,
    Hulu or Netflix.
  • She feels the show won’t be as violent as Game of Thrones but wants that
integrity and style, and that ā€œauthenticityā€ to the books that Game of Thrones has (So for the rating,
I’m guessing she feels around M?)
  • Anne wants to be true to the books and what the fans want to see (in regards to characters and plot points)
  • She appreciated
the commitment of the team for the IWTV film and wants to keep up to that standard. She does not want unreasonable changes and compromises
  • Chronologically, she wants to begin with TVL with Lestat as a young man.
    • Feels around the 2nd/3rd season is where IWTV would start
    • The books are long, so it will not be a one season / one book situation.
    • It
will begin chronologically, so it won’t be Lestat reading IWTV and THEN
starting with his story as a response, it will start in France as the
      events happen
(I was hoping it would be the former…)
  • No Mayfair witches in the show
  • Characters who are introduced later, but existed chronologically earlier like Benedick and Magnus, will be put earlier in
    the show
  • The Talamasca will be heavily involved ā€œeventuallyā€ in
the series, possibly earlier on. Related to this, she wants to tell the
history of her vampires and those entities.
  • She
wants to definitely (so badly) cover the scene where Lestat is being
turned ā€œstage by stageā€¦ā€ meaning him being in the tower and having
realizations about his strength after drinking the blood. Also, how he
turns Gabrielle (possibly wants to have a young actress to play
Gabrielle and have her human age appear through makeup so the transformation will be more dramatic)
  • Louis’ story WILL be told, but the show will be mostly from Lestat’s POV
  • Anne hopes the show will go into production before the end of this year. Around 2018
is when it would come out
  • Anne and Chris have had a lot of interested companies already looking into
developing the project (but she doesn’t want to reveal who is talking to them since it ā€œwouldn’t be fairā€)
  • She isn’t sure if the show will break the 4th
wall. She acknowledges that Lestat does it in the books, but she feels
she would have to stick with it for the entirety of the show and that
would be difficult (so it sounds like mostly a ā€œnoā€ but she’s considering it)
  • Christopher
and her are currently outlining around 5 seasons (estimated) for the TV
series. They are also writing drafts for the first 4 episodes

Re: the above, it’s a #Long post, so extra huge thanks toĀ @firelight-fading for taking one for the team and not only watching the OVCFB livestream but gathering up all this info into such clean formatting for us! We salute you.

So I was the anon that lost her shit finishing TVL, lol and now I’m on QOTD. I appreciated all Rice’s lofty writing in IWTV/TVL but it got a little tiring sometimes. Now I have a new respect for Rice on how she is able to drastically adapt her writing depending on the characters’ POV (if that makes sense). And going from 40 BC to the 80s. I liked that chapter about baby jenks and the diction, humor and language. Maybe cause it was a hell of a lot easier to read +Do you have a fav book out of VC?

Hello again, anon that lost her shit finishing TVL! Keep us posted, I love these fresh impressions of VC bc I can never quite get mine back, that first experience of each of the books I’ve already read. And re-read. Although, I do bring smtg different to them on each re-read, as I’ve gotten older and had more of my own experiences and philosophical revisions to compare to our fave dysfunctional vampires’.

*nods* Yes, AR has shown us many voices in her writing,

I think you put it very well. She has given us POVs from the lofty to the much less lofty. The lofty POVs appeal to ppl who enjoy that and the more modern stuff appeals to ppl who enjoy that… @annabellioncourt helped me out on a post about the voice of Louis,Ā his POV seems to draw on older literature, and he loves to read those books, so of course he would absorb that somewhat anachronistic flavor. LouisĀ may be deliberately making his story a little difficult to read, as he is revealing a lot but also keeping some things secret, keeping Daniel at arm’s length.Ā

^Footage of characters from their own POV chapters in one book vying for attention ā¤

QOTD was a good collection of this bc she’s jumping characters a lot in that book, which she didn’t do in TVL and IWTV, except to have her main characters sit and listen to others tell their own stories. In those instances, we did get some variation in the POV, but again, it was through the filter of the person who later told/recorded the story for us, the readers (i.e. Lestat telling us about > Marius telling Lestat about > the Elder telling Marius about > the origin of the vampires! Check out @comixqueenā€˜s VC storyception!)

My fave VC changes over time, but consistently, it’s been TVL. Longer answer here.Ā I did my own VC ranking awhile back, which I skimmed just now and still agree with.

TVL is my fave bc Lestat. LESTAT! He does have flaws, for sure. Flaws that could spiral anyone into depression. But his lust for life overrides everything ā¤Ā

^And I think part of why we all love him (those of us that do love him) against our own better judgment is that even when he royally fracks up, he gets back up, dusts himself off, and careens into the next car.

Can I just add: the way Lestat tilts his head in that second gif, #he’s so curious, #catlike,Ā #absorbing the whole experience, #being in a moving car, #delicious pulse of a freshĀ victimĀ burning inĀ his hand, #all served up and waiting, #likeĀ Holy Communion,Ā #DanielĀ might be one ofĀ Lestat’s first human kills since reviving himself, #all those years spent healing mind and bodyĀ reading comic books, #living vicariously through Sam Spade, #eating rats and alley cats in a filthy hovel, #which is normally repulsive to him on so many levels, #wearing an old moldyĀ blanket, #rejected by Louis, #utterly alone, #hiding from all the evolving world and scary new technology #and now he’s IN IT, #he heard Louis’ voice from the street and followed, #lurked anxiouslyĀ outside, #bc even in San Francisco a wraith like him could arouse suspicion, #picked the license plate number out of Daniel’s mind, #got into the backseat and waited in his car, #waited in the dark as Daniel tossed his leather jacket on him, #waited hungrily, #lips too dry to even close properly,Ā #and now he’s ready to leap into the next big adventure, #… #just needs a good meal first.

@i-want-my-iwtv Ā Tel me, WHY are you not writing a fic for that instead of hashtags? Ā *prod*

It’s been a year since @vampchronficā€˜s comment here, written some pieces I’m so proud of since then, currently collaborating on one w/ @wicked-felina that I’m really passionate about, just… thank youĀ @vampchronfic, for the support! It meant a lot to me then and still does, now ā¤

To my fanged little trash kittens and monsters: have you guys read @vampchronficā€˜s fic? It’s under Gairid on AO3. Huge inspiration for me, given me so many headcanons over the years, trulyĀ one of my all-time fave fic writers. *prods* go check out her stuff.

who is your favorite short term character? I personally adore baby jenks for reasons I can’t quite explain

Mojo.Ā Lestat’s real son, protective of his dad and loyal, a heart of gold, and basically a living security blanket. Lestat re: Mojo, TOBT:

And before this story moves any further, let me say something about this dog. He isn’t going to do anything in this book.Ā

He won’t save a drowning baby, or rush into a burning building to rouse the inhabitants from near-fatal sleep. He isn’t possessed by an evil spirit; he isn’t a vampire dog. He’s in this narrative simply because I found him in the snow behind that town house in Georgetown, and I loved him, and from that first moment, he seemed somehow to love me. It was all too true to the blind and merciless laws I believe in – the laws of nature, as men say; or the laws of the Savage Garden, as I call them myself. Mojo loved my strength; I loved his beauty. And nothing else ever really mattered at all.Ā

^He’s at least a little wrong, Mojo did alot in this book. He was quietly supportive when Lestat needed it most. He saw through to Lestat’s soul, bc he recognized Lestat even though the physical appearance changed drastically ā¤ So many feels for Mojo!

Runners up, or, If I Had to Choose A People: (in no special order)

  • Yvette from movie!IWTV – I headcanon her as having been raised with Louis, close to his age, and treated like a sister to him. That he was more fond of her than of his own biological sister.
  • Celeste and Estelle – Stunning vampiresses at the Theatre des Vampires who seemed to think they could paw at Claudia w/o consequences.
  • Santiago – I headcanon that he had a thing for/with Armand, maybe an unrequited crush on Armand, and then lashed out horribly when Louis came into the picture and stole Armand’s heart. Santiago has a wicked little serenade for Claudia in one of my fave fics of all time, @wicked-felinaā€‹ā€˜s First Light. #Headcanon Accepted.
  • Gretchen the nun – I just felt very inspired by the way she handled things and was saddened by the way she had to leave the story. It made sense, though.
  • Khayman – Most of his action is in QOTD so I’d consider him a short term character for that. He was a BAMF, and then later, had a real presence, and his awkwardness was so charming.
  • Tough Cookie – I mean c’mon. She’s in Lestat’s band. Or is he in her band? More about her would have been awesome.
  • Baby Jenks – Yeah I liked her alot, too! The way her narrative was written was refreshing, unlike any canon before it. Concisely stated but rich and believable backstory. She deserved to have more screentime.
  • Morgan – from IWTV, the dude who lost his wife on their honeymoon to the European vampire and ended up not lasting much longer. I really loved Louis and Claudia’s interactions with him.
  • Nicolas de LenfentĀ – bc of reasons, and yet, with all the love for him of late, he doesn’t feel like as much of a short term character. He can’t be described in one or two sentences so easily as the others on this list. Suffice it to say that just his name brings up my headcanons about him, and I struggle to choose one over any others, it feels like it would cheapen him to do that.

…There are more but those are the main ones that come to mind, and it’s a long enough list, so I’ll end it there.

therambler13draws:

ā€œfor Claudia’s amusementā€

I’ve been informed there is a shocking lack of Lestat and Louis performing Shakespeare together. which is heartbreaking and very not okay.
