Ricean vampire asexuality

inesbc2001 asked:

Hi, so I’m dying to know what the VC Tumblr fandom thinks about vampire sexuality.

IMO the fact that vampires don’t have sex doesn’t necessarily make them asexual.

I’m thinking about Marius with Amadeo in Blood and Gold, and Louis with the mortal boy in Paris.

There is a passage in IWTV that goes roughly like this: “He pressed his whole body against my legs and I felt the firm strength of his sex under his clothes. A moan escaped from my lips…”

– I translated this myself from the Spanish version, but you get the idea 😉

I’d be thrilled to further discuss vampire sexuality.

That’s all, keep up the good work! 🙂

#Your headcanon may vary.

So I’ve discussed this topic at length in my tags for it: #asexuality, #asexual, #sex, #sexuality, #lets talk about sex.

It all depends on your idea of what sex is, but Anne Rice has been definitive about it:

The scene that you mention between Louis and the mortal boy: Louis is still capable of finding that boy’s hard on to be arousing, but he’s getting alot of sensory input in that moment, and Armand is probably manipulating him psychologically, too.

Marius/Amadeo: Amadeo is mortal and experiencing things differently than Marius is.

I’ll open this to discussion, what are your opinions/headcanon on Ricean vampire sexuality?

Anne does often try to change her cannon, but that follows the books. No one mentioned sex until the third book, when Lestat said that male vampires couldn’t…ahem, work that part of their anatomy. Louis mentioned in the first one that the blood exchange of vampires, and the killing of mortals was more intimate than intercourse anyway.

fyeahgothicromance:

Thank you for clearing that up! I remember Louis mentioning the intimacy thing but I totally forgot about Lestat. I just have a vivid memory of Armand and Daniel in bed and I guess my mind tried to fill in the blanks.

Honestly, It’s been so long since I’ve read them that I’m starting to wonder what I actually read and what my friends and I headcanon’ed.

ooc; For anyone that wondered, this was a thing on her Facebook today.  Both the vampires not having sex and the Daniel & Marius bit.

//Awww. That’s sweet. (Not sarcastic. It is.) I definitely got the impression they cared very much for each other in PL. I still don’t read it as a romantic relationship. I don’t know it, it just doesn’t feel that way to me in the text. But I can see it being a very loving and intimate relationship. If it gets passionate, though, I see there being problems, given that Marius is so controlling and Daniel does not like being controlled. Will be interesting to see how this goes in Blood Paradise

I do hope Armand and Daniel reconnect in some meaningful way (which doesn’t have to be at the expense of Dan’s relationship with Marius, whatever that is – I contend they’re not very monogamous creatures anyhow). But really, I just want to see them TALK, goddamn it. Nod at each other. SOMETHING.

#want #I want this bc of reasons

I was curious what you thought about this… When I was reading TVL and learning about Gabrielle, I had the distinct impression that she was trans man. All the stuff about how she seemed to resent most of her children and her marriage, her choice to wear men’s clothes, and her desire to keep her hair cut short is what made me feel that way. I just read it last year, but I’ve never seen any other fans comment on that, so I was wondering if it was just me? (I’ve only read IWTV & TVL by the way)

Gabrielle has some good action in book 3, QOTD, so you might be interested in that.

I love it when ppl play up both genders in their fanart of her. Especially her miffed reaction to being called Mom still!

I’m not really knowledgeable about transgender issues, but it is an interesting headcanon re: Gabrielle.

But I’ll try anyway a little! Maybe when she was mortal she might have preferred being a man because alot of power and freedom went along with that gender at that time. I headcanon that her marriage was an arranged one, not out of love. She doesn’t seem to have negative feelings about her own body in its femaleness. She wants all the men in town to sleep with her as a power-thing, as an ultimate fuck-you to her ungrateful and unloving husband.

I don’t think she resented her children so much as she didn’t really reach out to them when they were young, bc so many did not survive to adulthood that, having known them better, their loss would have been more painful for her. Maybe she resented the children that survived because they didn’t feel loved by her, and sided with the Marquis; so by the time they were old enough that she could trust that they would continue to adulthood, they had already become so much like him that she didn’t like them as people, either (Lestat being the obvious exception).

She might have been bisexual as a mortal, too, and felt trapped by her arranged marriage.

//OOC: Yeah, so here’s actual the question I asked on Facebook AND the response, for those interested, since there’s a version going around without the question. Never actually asked about sex just the depth of the relationship, but Anne does usually throw that in during ship questions. (I still apply fanon logic since Ursula banged Vittorio in his book. Discrepancies, love it for fic and RP reasons.)

Yeah.. well, we all read PL, right? In this book EVERYONE loves EVERYONE and EVERYTHING in  EVERY moment EVER mentioned! So yeah, of course that Marius loves Daniel. It does not confirm anything.

And sex. Didn’t Lestat say in QOTD that his johnson was like priapus ready for something that could never been performed anymore? Not with pleaure that is. So, well, technically, penetration is possible…but orgasm through that? Nah…

merciful-death said: ooc; Didn’t post the full question because I didn’t want to show disrespect by posting your real name on Tumblr. I apologize.

Yeah, I’d have done the same, Merciful “D”. 😉

//OOC: It was never explicitly stated in PL that Daniel reciprocated feelings for Marius, which is why I asked. With Anne’s response, now we know. Again, the point of this question was the ship, not sex, but the fandom seems incapable of enjoying the happy parts of anything without someone having a fit.

The Vampire Chronicles: If you shipped it, it was or will be canon at some point. The ship whore’s delight.

AR Concerning Blood Paradise – Louis and Lestat.

OOC; So I found this on Anne’s Facebook page. It was so amusing, but I have to agree. I love the wedding description she wrote for her fans [wedding des.]. It was fun and adorable, and keeping within context with the historical ruling in the US. I agree with her on this one and just her general positive attitude towards Lestat. It’s so easy to criticize him. Lestat he doesn’t make it easy. I get that.

AR: “Please, let’s be optimistic. Allow my Brat Prince some hope!” – I have a sneaking suspicion that it was just Lestat posing as AR.

The last comment gets me whiningforcenturies this was us yesterday….WAS IT NOT? WHERE IS THE LIE THO? Post from last night.

“Anne, please, A girl can only cry so many happy tears in one night.”

^I’m pissing myself laughing because the comment about how you can only cry so many happy tears in one night was me.

So, I’m not going to throw in my “Why fight eachother?” “When you can all love me together!” gifset w/ our fandom’s lead character, because that’s sugarcoating when gently #-swats with newspaper (thanks cup-of-lixx!), is so much more appropriate. A gentle swat!

Was this about the potential wedding of fictional vampires? I think that is the topic on which this conflict started. There were opinions on that and people felt that contrary opinions maligned their own. I think it’s worth analyzing why, so that when this happens again (IT WILL) we can all react a little more peaceably. Hit the “Keep reading…” for that.

Basically: serious aggressive discussions happen in every field, every fandom, every topic that exists. That’s part of Real Life. The word “fandom” doesn’t guarantee that everyone who likes what you like will have the same opinion about it, or that they will even like YOU.

I think we can all agree that we all care about these characters, and we all want to see them treated properly in canon.

Specifically about the wedding:

Anne Rice offered some plot points and ideas about a possible wedding between her characters occurring in the next VC installment. Opinions here seemed to divide into:

1. OMG this is awesome! Show me the fluffy ❤ Let’s talk about the venue, let’s get *~David Tutera~* in here, ‘stat! I’m so so happy that my ship will be officially validated in canon, I mean, finally, no one can call them “just friends” if they’re actually MARRIED <3<3<3 I JUST LOVE THESE CHARACTERS AND WANT WHAT’S BEST FOR THEM.

2. UGH this is so lame! This is a mortal convention and is it really applicable to immortal non-human beings? Plus which, marriage isn’t for everyone (especially creatures who have difficulty with monogamy *cough cough* LESTAT who falls in love at lease once in every book *cough*) so why must it be forced into OUR series? Is it fanservice? Should authors do fanservice, even at the expense of writing out-of-character? I JUST LOVE THESE CHARACTERS AND WANT WHAT’S BEST FOR THEM.

From what I gathered, it appeared that these two very contrasting opinions led to:

  • Group 1 people feeling that Group 2 people were shitting on their enthusiasm, and
  • Group 2 people feeling that Group 1 people were being shallow and treating this series like cheap romance, in which no one can really be happy unless they’re married off at the end.

Whether or not either group is “right,” we all have our own way of engaging with it. Whether finding it an escape from reality and a source of joy and squee, or finding it a packed mystery worth examining with a critical eye, and everything in between.

Not everyone is leaving. No one needs to leave. The fandom isn’t full of these serious aggressive discussions, they happen occasionally. The internet/tumblr is big enough for everyone.

I absolutely ADORE the way you put time and effort into answering all the asks you get, especially how in depth you go to explain something. <3

AsjfGHulds!!? YOU SWEET CINNAMON ROLL *collapses*

Messages like this make it all worth it *u* I’m always honored that people want my opinion, and I do really try to support it with canon or fanon.

Of course, #your headcanon may vary, and #ship and let ship. I know some ppl are very defensive of their headcanons, so always take my opinions as that – MY opinions. If you want to accept some headcanons, cool, if not, also cool ;]

Hey, what kind of music does everybody listen to? I think we all know Lestat’s music taste but what about Armand, David, Louis and Marius. I imagine Louis listens to Nirvana or Hozier or classical music.

I could write a thesis on this. DON’T WORRY I WON’T DO THAT.

(BTW, if you’re just looking for music reccs, I have a VC fanmix, fanmix, and music tag for that)

First of all, you have to consider when are they listening to music? It can be solitary or social…

Armand ~

  • Enjoys gathering a small audience and hiring live musicians to play complicated classical pieces. Or asking that vampires who can play things come and entertain them. He still loves Sybelle at the piano, even better that her repertoire has expanded beyond the Appassionata. Antoine has played lively duets with her.
  • Otherwise, Armand throws on huge wireless headsets while perusing art galleries. He’ll listen to anything others recommend to him, he shares a Spotify account so that anyone can try out his playlist, which has a broad spectrum of musical styles.
  • Armand is drawn to works that are used in ice skating competitions, oddly. It is a recent obsession.

David ~

  • Musicals, anything upbeat. Has a love for Spanish culture, Flamenco, like the Gypsy Kings. Without much urging, Lestat will put on makeup and dress up in a Flamenco gown and dance with David in public!
  • David’s rainy-day guilty pleasure are artists like Michael Bolton, for when he’s home alone, feeling left out of the coven activities.
  • He also loves Sting; the song that hooked him was Desert Rose, which Marius sent him on a mix-CD because of the Arabic singer, Cheb Mami.

Louis ~

  • It takes a long time for Louis to warm up to new bands, and he likes a few pieces by Hozier which Lestat added to Louis’ outdated iPod. It’s an older gen model but it still works fine, so Louis doesn’t see a need to replace it.
  • He prefers pieces without lyrics, ambient works that he can melt into while reading.
  • The Blade Runner movie that Armand got him to watch the first time made Louis a Vangelis fan and a fan of film soundtracks. He often plays the Gone Girl soundtrack.

Marius ~

  • Daniel and Lestat have introduced him to alot of modern music. Marius will listen while he paints. Marius is the biggest Hozier fan of the four discussed.
  • Whatever will inspire during painting, but he will also go to live performances of just about anything to be sociable ❤
