I’m going to be roleplaying with someone and they want to do a mother/son relationship, like not in the usual way. Like, what is the ACTUAL relationship between Gabrielle and Lestat? What is it really? I want to do a thread, but I don’t want to trigger anyone or make it look all grim and incestuous. And I sincerely apologize if I’ve offended you by asking the question. I just dunno.

[By the way, I usually answer things with a relevant fanart/image/gif, but in this case, I think it’s too serious a topic for that.]

  • “And I sincerely apologize if I’ve offended you by asking the question.”

No offense taken, it’s a fair question!

I am a little wary that this is a bait set out by those who see things in RP/fiction as “promoting” something in real life. A bait set to invite the kind of anti-shippers who are looking for a way to tear me down regardless of how I respond, when all I ever want to promote is:

The 3 Laws of Fandom.

(And I’ll quote a relevant piece of it from @ozhawkauthor, but please read the whole post):

“Much (though not all) fandom is about shipping. There are as many possible ships as there are fans, maybe more. You may have an OTP (One True Pairing), you may have a NOTP, that pairing that makes you want to barf at the very thought of its existence.

It’s not up to you to police ships or to determine what other people are allowed to ship. Just because you find that one particular ship problematic or disgusting, does not mean that other people are not allowed to explore its possibilities in their fanworks.

You are free to create contrarian content, to write meta about why a particular ship is repulsive, to discuss it endlessly on your private blog with like-minded persons.

It is not appropriate to harass creators about their ships, it is not appropriate to demand they do not create any more fanworks about those ships, or that they create fanwork only in a manner that you deem appropriate.

These three laws add up to the following:

You are not paying for fanworks content, and you have no rights to it other than to choose to consume it, or not consume it. If you do choose to consume it, do not then attack the creator if it wasn’t to your taste. That’s the height of bad manners.

Be courteous in fandom. It makes the whole experience better for all of us.”

I want to make it very clear that I’m answering this as someone who supports exploring dark themes and taboo topics in fiction/RP. As long as you are not violating real living person’s rights, or invading any real living person’s space*, then you are doing nothing wrong.

I’ve been blocked. I try to tag for things that can be triggering/upsetting to others, but I will not self-censor to appease everyone, so I absolutely support ppl unfollowing/blocking me if what I post makes them uncomfortable.

*Posting your fic/RP with the appropriate warning tags is a form of respecting others’ space and rights. If they don’t like your writing, they can block you, too. Their dashboard is their responsibility.

  • “I want to do a thread, but I don’t want to trigger anyone or make it look all grim and incestuous.”

I think grim and incestuous could be very interesting to explore; not every fic/RP can be a fluffy Coffee Shop AU!

Re: Concern about triggering anyone, I’ll repeat myself, it is everyone’s responsibility to curate their own fandom experience and as long as you are tagging and putting content under cuts, it is their responsibility to protect themselves. If they are incapable of that, then they should ask a trusted person to monitor their internet use.

People are triggered by many things, not just taboo and darker themed writing. This person’s triggers are Jello, Popsicles, Soup Broth, please read it! And to quote from that post, “a lot of ‘activists’ on tumblr aren’t looking to actually help anyone or make anything better: they’re sadists cruising for new victims.”

TL; DR: Anon, do what you and your partner are comfortable doing.** If RPing it as a ship squicks you both out, don’t do it. If Rping it as a ship is exciting to you both and you want to explore that taboo, go for it! Just be sure to tag it with the right warnings, and add cuts so that ppl will be protected from content they may not want to see. You can also RP privately however you like, there is no rule that says RP must be done publicly.

**If your RP partner is pressuring you to RP something you are uncomfortable with, then I would suggest not RPing that with them, and similarly, if you are pressuring your RP partner to RP something they are uncomfortable with, I would suggest not pressuring them into it.

Hit the jump for my response, cut for length, and discussion about possible incest between fictional characters.

  • “I’m going to be roleplaying with someone and they want to do a mother/son relationship, like not in the usual way.”

Is there a “usual way” to RP? If you’re suggesting in the ship way, it is something I’m sure exists.

Ppl RP with canon in mind, or without it.

  • “Like, what is the ACTUAL relationship between Gabrielle and Lestat? What is it really?”

That is a question with a ton of landmines, so I’m not going to say that they are definitely a ship or definitely not, it’s up to the individual reader/RPer to decide based on their reading of canon, or diverge from canon and write the characters however they see fit. This kind of exploration is one of many ways to engage with the characters and I see nothing wrong with canon-compliant or not canon-compliant writing, either way.

Personally, I can see both sides of the argument.

>>Not as a ship: There are some who see them purely as a mother and a son, and DEFINITELY nothing more. She does come to his rescue at the rock concert (how did she know to go to him? She has telepathy, but being his fledgling, she cannot read Lestat’s mind; she could have picked up the warnings from other vampires, or Louis might have contacted her), there are several times in canon when she asserts herself in an authoritative manner. She’s protective of him when he’s in a coma, and she slaps some sense into him when necessary. All these things can be filed under “motherly.”

It’s easy to not ship them, so I don’t really need to provide further canon evidence, they are, biologically, mother and son! There’s nothing more to add to that.

>>As a ship, Unpopular Opinion: one could argue that they can be shipped, because:

A) He becomes her maker, which changes their relationship to him being more of the “parent.”

– During the initial phase of Lestat turning Gabrielle in TVL, as he’s taking her life, he says she’s no longer his mother (to be fair, this is the kind of intimacy a vampire feels when feeding on anyone, but still, worth mentioning):

My
knowledge dimmed and flickered and there was no mother anymore,
no petty need and petty terror; she was simply who she was. She was
Gabrielle.

– Then, once she’s turned, she insists on being called by her name instead of “Mother,” so some take that as proof that she doesn’t see herself as being his mother anymore, in the mortal sense of the word.

B) The act of making a vampire is extremely intimate, it has been compared to childbirth. It’s the most intimate act a vampire can share with anyone. I believe in fanon that it creates a physiological bond between maker and fledgling, so one could extrapolate to say that the act itself could create a ship.

Note: In most maker/fledgling relationships, there is some assumption that turning the fledgling is done to bind maker and fledgling as a ship; essentially making the fledgling into a companion for the maker and the maker into a companion for the fledgling. In this case, Lestat turned Gabrielle in order to save her life, not knowing if he would even survive the act, so I don’t think this was a factor here, neither of them necessarily intending to be in a relationship together, but the physiological bond discussed above would still be a possibility.

Also worth mentioning is that he asks for her consent, as he had not been asked for consent himself, and the question is very clear:

No words again, just the silent thrust of it, and the question, more immense than could ever be put into words, Do you want to come with me now? DO YOU WANT TO COME WITH ME INTO THIS NOW? I hide nothing from you, not my ignorance, not my fear, not the simple terror that if I try I might fail. I do not even know if it is mine to give more than once, or what is the price of giving it, but I will risk this for you, and we will discover it together, whatever the mystery and the terror, just as I’ve discovered alone all else. With her whole
being she said Yes.

^This could be construed as him wanting her for a companion and her agreeing to it.

C) LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX. This is a point of debate for many fans, whether the Ricean vampires can have penetrative sex. In my opinion, in canon they cannot, and while penetrative sex is NOT A REQUIREMENT to a relationship (there are relationships where there is no penetrative sex and they are no less valid than those which do have it, in my opinion), the incestuous aspect of a Lestat/Gabrielle ship is alot less squicky for me knowing that they aren’t able to literally bone in the mortal way. Some would argue that the bloodsharing is more intimate than penetrative sex, and that’s fine, but still, being unable to literally bone is just so much less squicky, in my opinion. But ppl made fanart of essentially that and it was still very funny, to me!

Call it what you will, but the first bloodkiss shared in canon is between Lestat and Gabrielle on the night she is turned.

^^^ALL THAT SAID, I wouldn’t shoot anyone down who ships it, they are both adult fictional characters. One could argue that there is some canon evidence to support it, but canon evidence is unnecessary.

Again, Anon, do what you and your partner are comfortable doing. If RPing it as a ship squicks you both out, don’t do it. If Rping it as a ship is exciting to you both and you want to explore that taboo, go for it! Just be sure to tag it with the right warnings, and add cuts so that ppl will be protected from content they may not want to see. You can also RP privately however you like, there is no rule that says RP must be done publicly.

If your RP partner is pressuring you to RP something you are uncomfortable with, then I would suggest not RPing with them, and similarly, if you are pressuring your RP partner to RP something they are uncomfortable with, I would suggest not pressuring them into it.

Have you read Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis? If so, can I skip Kapetria’s Tale and still understand the rest of the book? Her story is SO boring and its been holding me back from finishing the book for weeks.

gothiccharmschool:

I liveblogged my readthrough of that damn book: it’s all under the ROA and THREAT LEVEL: PRINCE LESTAT tags over at @gothiccharmschool.

Kapetria’s Tale and the saga of the Replimoids are simultaneously the most boring and the most cracky sections of the book. I cackled over the Space Birb aliens that created the Replimoids, but I don’t think I’ll ever reread those sections.

The sections about the hijinks of Lestat and his vampire court? Those are more like what I want/expect from a Vampire Chronicles book. For example, I am terribly fond of Prince Lestat, and have reread it a couple of times. Is it as good as the original Vampire Chronicles trilogy? No.

Finally, Anne Rice has stated herself (not that I can find links to the interviews where she said it) that she had been working on a stand-alone Atlantis book for over a decade, but couldn’t get it to where she was happy with it, and decided that it should be combined with a Vampire Chronicles book. I … do not agree with her authorial choices about this.

TL;DR: No one should feel they have to slog through Kapetria’s Tale in RoA. Yes, it ends up changing the whole mythology and backstory of the vampires, but … I reject those changes.

Thanks for your addition, @gothiccharmschool! Very much appreciated, and I am with you 100% on wanting more hijinks of Lestat and his vampire court! Good reminder about reading your liveblog of PLROA, I’m sure your liveblog can help me get through it.

I, too, do not agree with her authorial choices about this. Here’s her quote about doing her specialty VC-mashup funtimes for PLROA:

… i, too, am unable to finish PLROA for MONTHS bc of Kapetria’s Tale! FOR THE SAME REASONS. I mean maybe it’s not boring to some ppl? But for me, I’m just… I was weirded out before by the Replimoids and getting to her tale I just didn’t want to buy more of what was being sold.

So I have been really struggling to pick it up again EVEN THO IT IS RIGHT ON MY DESK IN PLAIN VIEW, mocking me every day that I don’t just CRACK IT OPEN AND TAKE MY MEDICINE like I should if I really cared about this series (which I clearly do).

I went and asked around & skimmed ahead bc I very much like to be spoiled, and I won’t spoil you here, but from what I skimmed and from what I’ve been told, I don’t think you need to know Kapetria’s Tale to understand the rest of the book. It goes back to our vampires and their shenanigans and SCIENCE, and in the old days we might have called this all very “cracky” stuff, but the ending might even have been written before the Atlantis portion was added in, it seems to depend so little on it, but again, that’s from my spoilage.

…But currently? What are ppl’s thoughts on how PLROA ends? I would like ppl to speak freely, so there may be spoilers in comments/reblogs.

Message me privately, if you prefer, and I’ll add it to this post under a cut if it’s spoilery.

“I was working on a novel called Born for Atlantis, and I just couldn’t get it to work. I thought, “What if I could somehow combine this with Lestat and the vampires?” And it was like, everything worked. Something happens to me when I write from Lestat’s point of view. There’s no question about it. By the time I was done, it felt inevitable, like it always had been…. It was a rare experience.”

So I normally don’t play the casting game, but I just watched the first two episodes of Will on TNT — a glam/punk telling of Shakespeare’s early career — and Christopher Marlow is so VERY Lestat to me. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, and maybe it’s just me, but wow. The actor is Jamie Campbell Bower. I’d send you a link but it won’t let me.

FIRST and foremost, one of the Lestat RPers who still uses JCB as a face claim, @cdf-archive (now known as @couer-de-feu, tumblr isn’t hyperlinking it OH WELL) wrote up a gr9 post about JCB as Lestat [X], excerpt under the cut.

I feel ya, I find that playing the casting game is hard bc ppl can be really dismissive of actors, pointing out what they think are physical limitations of the actors, or whatever, it’s easy to nitpick based on our own ideals of beauty.

A great performance is more than just the actor’s looks, it’s the harmony of every film crew member’s job done well, from the grips, to the sound ppl, to the costume ppl, to the director, and so on, not just the actors. But talking VC casting can be fun to see which of our choices are shared by others ❤

So YEAH, JCB was a somewhat popular FC for Lestat RPers at one time, so your opinion is/was shared by others! I’m gonna reblog a few pieces of fanart after I post this that are basically JCB as Lestat, so stay tuned 😉 EDIT: I have fanart of Paul Boche as Lestat, not JCB! I’ll reblog those. But can someone send me some Lestat fanart based on JCB? I feel like I’ve seen it but can’t remember where…

^I don’t have a joke to go with this, I’d made it

aaaages ago

for @coeur-de-feu. Maybe it’s Lestat reacting to coming home to a Louis dressed only in a sheer green scarf, surrounded by piles of red roses, for Lestat’s birthday or smtg, lol.

I haven’t seen Will yet but it looks like an intriguing and snazzy take on Shakespeare! Admittedly, I have not been a huge fan of Jamie Campbell Bower, bc I haven’t seen the stuff he’s been in, I’m not a YA fan… from the pics I’ve seen of JCB he has seemed too skinny/bony for my own headcanon of Lestat (and I admit that’s based on my own ideals of beauty)-

BUT BUT BUT, these pics of him from Will are looking, actually, very #Lestatuesque to me!

image

^Like, maybe it’s the hair*, the lighting, the expression, etc., (a combination probably) idk what it is, but his face seems less HELLO CHEEKBONE now for some reason? He’s very Lestat here, to me. Like he’s in thrall, listening to Nicki playing violin music.

*The hair would need SOME more styling and highlights but JCB being a natural blond (I think?) should make it easier to brighten his hair up than it was for Tom, who has never been able to pull off a really bright blond in any movie I can remember (even the silver looked kinda strange in Collateral but I digress…)

image

[^X from @foreverjamiecampbellbower] ^Even here, yes, JCB has cheekbones you could slice your hand open on, but maybe the stubble is also just, giving that jawline and generous mouth the attention they deserve? IDK it’s working for me!

I think JCB has enough of the physical part nailed down that the rest can be built on his performance. Tom had limitations appearance-wise, too, but the acting won ppl over who don’t even like him in any other roles.

This is already a long-ish post so for more of my thoughts on him, hit up my #jamie campbell bower tag.

Also, hit the jump for a quote from @cdf-archive/@coeur-de-feu that I think is relevant here.

The fact is, we all have our own ideals of beauty and our own headcanon of these characters. It’s highly unlikely that one actor will satisfy all of our expectations, and @cdf-archive wrote up a great post about JCB as Lestat [X], excerpt below:

“There will always be inconsistencies, everywhere you look. But it’s not really even whether or not I find him perfect. It’s his imperfections that make him perfect, to me. And perhaps that’s what Magnus found in Lestat – his imperfections gave him an indescribable yet authentic beauty and Magnus wanted to immortalize those features by turning Lestat into a vampire, even though Lestat did not want it. It was okay with Magnus that Lestat had a few things here and there that weren’t completely perfect; he found him extraordinarily beautiful, regardless.”

When could Enkil have reigned?

amadeo-child-of-the-renaissance:

//As somebody who got their last mark/grade on all of their egyptology exams at the University today and finally passed, I want to set my inner history nerd free:

(sources are to be found at the bottom or within the text)

image

Enkil is supposed to be a predynastic King.

So what is the Predynastic Era to begin with?
According to most historians that would be the Neolithic period (a.k.a. New Stone Age!), beginning ca. 6000 BC, with the first human settlements known in the area and ending around 3100 BC, with the first Pharaoh (= Narmer/Menes).

That’s right. Enkil’s reign as a predynastic king could very roughly(!) be placed somewhere in between 6000 BC to 3100 BC.
For reference and amusement:  the creation of writing is roughly to be sat about 5000 years ago (which marks the beginning of history).

Now, we can’t have the Father of all Vampires be Stone Age man, can we?
Let’s try to narrow that time frame down a bit:

I think, since Anne Rice describes some sort of a holding of court, we are pretty safe in ruling the time of the earliest settlements out (little mud brick houses consisting of only one window-less room for a whole family and the earliest form of homo sapiens as subject just don’t make for an epic court to rule over.)

Egyptologists speak of a so called Naqada culture, spanning from ca. 4400 BC to 3000 BC, which can be divided into the following three parts:

  1. Naqada I (4400-3500 BC) -> almost no refined artwork/craftsmanship
  2. Naqada II (3500-3200 BC) -> first metalworking (meteoritical iron)
  3. Naqada III (3200-3000 BC)

We can skip the first two Naqada periods, since there wasn’t really any (known) form of sovereignty comparable to the rule of a king.

Which leads us to Naqada III:
Naqada III is also referred to as Dynasty 0 or the Protodynastic Period.

Here is the issue with chronology within the subject of Egyptology: When the early egyptologists tried to name dynasties there were multiple debates and, like every time when too many big egos are involved, things went wrong. To make things short:
There is now a time called “Zero Dynasty” (which comes before the 1st dyn.), which might be characterized as Predynastic by some and Early Dynastic by others.

There were kings in Naqada III, but they weren’t part of a dynasty yet (hence Protodynastic or Predynastic). Most of them were most likely not related (a dynasty is the succession of kings of the same blood line), but fighting for dominion with each other.
The above mentioned King Narmer (aka Menes) is thought to be the last King of that period and the first Pharaoh of the 1st dynasty (He had been the first known King to unify Egypt).

In conclusion, Enkil’s reign should precede Narmer, but still be set in Naqada III, around 3200-3100 BC.

(We managed to narrow his reign down to 100 years, yay!)

There are, actually, some known Kings from that time that could give us an example for Enkil’s reign, or – which I find very interesting – a possible alias. Stay with me for a bit longer.

9 of them ruled in Lower Egypt, but only one can be placed in Naqada III for sure (forgive me for leaving out the rest):
That King is known as “Double Falcon”, after the depiction of his crest (they didn’t use cartouches by then but crests known as serekh and the historians named them after the depicted animals). Some say he might also have ruled in Upper Egypt.
3 kings are known to have ruled Upper Egypt during Naqada III:
Elephant”, “Bull” and “Scorpion I.”

Bull was probably the predecessor of Scorpion I., whose successor is believed to have been Double Falcon and later a king names Iry-Hor (late 32th dynasty.Iry-Hor is the earliest ruler of Egypt known by name and possibly the earliest historical person known by name).
No one knows for sure where to place Elephant.
All of them are believed to have lived during the early 32th century BC (which allows us to place them near the year 3200 BC to 3150 BC).

Iry-Hor was succeeded by “Ka”/”Sekhen”, who was probably succeeded by “Scorpion II.” or, more probable, by Narmer himself.

Now we have a sorry excuse of a chronology of rulers close to Enkil’s mortal years, ending with Narmer:

  • Bull
  • Scorpion I.
  • Double Falcon
  • Iry-Hor
  • Ka (Sekhen)
  • Scorpion II. or Narmer (Menes)

As you can see, there is a line of succession, albeit not one you should bet on, since egyptologists are still not 100% sure about the line of succession.
BUT: Where to place Elephant?

Elephant (maybe read as Pen-abw) is the provisional name of a predynastic ruler. But since the incarved rock inscriptions and ivory tags showing his name are either drawn sloppily, or lacking any royal crest, the reading and thus whole existence of king “Elephant” are highly disputed.

Egyptian Kings had many different names:

  • Horus name
  • Nebty-name
  • Golden Horus name
  • Throne name
  • their personal name

Here is a headcanon for you:

Enkil was the Pharaoh, whose throne-name was Pen-abu (“Great one from the (throne) seat”) how fitting.
Historians how call him “Elephant” and he was the predecessor of “Bull”, one of the earliest rulers of Naqada III period, in the early 32. dynasty.

•I’ve got a question that’s been bugging me for a while. In iwtv, Louis states he was turned in 1791. However from what I understand, Lestat was born in 1780. This would have made Lestat 11 when he turned Louis, which is obviously not the case. So, my question is was Louis lying about when he was turned to make him seem older and more powerful than he actually is or is just a continuity error? Thanks :) •

I get why you might be frustrated, I’m not sure how much VC you’ve read, I hope this answer doesn’t spoil you if you don’t want to be spoiled but here we go…

Lestat was born in 1760. Not sure where you got 1780… I believe you are forgetting the almost 10 yrs Lestat and Gabrielle ~wandered the Devil’s Road~ together, which was from 1780-89. There’s a timeline in the official Vampire Companion (there is some debate about discrepancies of this book to canon, but this book was intended to be the author’s deciding word on canon facts):

image

Here’s a snippet of the time line, sorry for the warping, but it’s a thick paperback book and I didn’t wanna injure the binding!

Worth noting also: AR underscores that Lestat was 20 when he was turned.*

image
image

So by 1791, Lestat is actually like 31 mortal years old, and Louis is in fact younger than he is, at 25 (why they made him 24 in the movie is beyond me bc it’s only a year different? IDK).

*Re: Lestat being turned at 20 or 21, that’s a topic that’s been debated for aaaaages, too, since he says in his book, “In the winter of my twenty-first year, I went out alone on horseback to kill a pack of wolves” and more confusingly, in the timeline above, AR indicates that Lestat is 19 when he goes to Paris w/ Nicolas so I am confusion, but taking Lestat’s line from TVL alone, that it’s his “twenty-first year”:

  • a baby’s “first year” is actually the day it’s born through it’s one-year birthday;
  • therefore, Lestat’s “twenty-first year” could be his year from his twentieth-year birthday through his twenty-first year birthday.

(Not that his birthday was celebrated in his house anyway, so it’s really just about whether he gets carded at bars, currently, and he totally does.)

I headcanon that:

  • Lestat kills the wolves in the winter, sometime after his twentieth birthday, 11/7/1779,
  • and then goes to Paris w/ Nicki that spring (5/1/1780 maybe).
  • Lestat and Nicki are working at the theatre for only a few months and then Lestat gets his big break in August: “It came in late August at last.”
  • Lestat only gets to perform for a few months, at least through October (”But in the month of October when Paris was already freezing,…”).
  • and then Magnus turns Lestat sometime close to, or before, his actual twenty-first birthday 11/7/1780. Maybe in October or that first week of November.

A little advice on life for anon,

[Continued from here X] What is our value in life? Who defines it? Can we improve ourselves alone? Do we take in all the criticism/advice from others?

You’re not alone,

I would bet that your parents, sister, teachers, all of them have experienced this, too. These are things we all deal with throughout life in different variations.

As I wrote under the cut, as introspective as he can be, I don’t think Lestat is necessarily the best at giving advice on this subject, and then, my own headcanon of him will vary from other Lestats. My Lestat doesn’t like to get down too deeply in emotional details.

DISCLAIMER: I’m not a psychologist, just another person trying to navigate my way through this life, so what works for me might not work for you. Different things work for different people. If you need professional help, please seek it!

These people in your life who make you feel inferior, maybe they’re not intentionally trying to be so crushing. They might not be aware that it’s hurtful. Or, you might need them to be more gentle with you than they are with others. People have different levels of sensitivity. You might want to level with your advisers, tell them specifically how you feel, and maybe you can find a way for them to help you w/o it hurting. It may or may not be possible.

Lestat tried to do this with his family when he was growing up but he was ignored or interrupted, when he wasn’t being beaten back for trying to improve himself. So much for having a caring family. I think this is why he writes his feelings out, bc you can’t be beaten, interrupted, or dismissed when you’re alone, writing a novel. Were they intentionally trying to crush his spirit? I don’t think so. I think he just wasn’t a big concern for them, they had given him a job to do and expected him to shut up and do it. Some families are unfortunately like that.

One thing that I learned that really helped me was realizing the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic validation. Extrinsic comes from outside of you (awards for talent, people agreeing with your ideas); intrinsic comes from inside (your own feelings of self-worth and self-esteem).

So Lestat’s family was shitty and wasn’t supportive of him. Well, he found passion in hunting and providing for his family anyway, he found love in the animals he kept that helped him hunt. He found love and joy in being at the monastery school or the theatre troupe. He was congratulated for his natural talent with acting, which is extrinsic, but he felt it when he was onstage, even aside from the applause: “I found a tongue for verses
and wit I’d never had in life.”
Something bloomed inside him.

You can nurture your own intrinsic well-being, you can validate your own opinions on things. I’ve found that this can lead to increased self-esteem and that confidence will help you achieve your extrinsic goals. Intrinsic satisfaction might be as simple as singing along to your fave music, and you’re hitting the notes and enjoying it so much that you don’t even realize how much time has passed. Like Nicki playing the violin. It’s called achieving Flow.

In positive psychology, flow, also known as the zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by complete absorption in what one does.

So I’ll address your concerns myself now, I just didn’t feel it was appropriate for me to do it through a fictional character.

– Dear Lestat, I feel like I’m never enough.

It’s the first thing you said and one thing you might try is altering your perspective. I recommend the study of positive psychology:

“Those who practice positive psychology attempt psychological interventions that foster positive attitudes toward one’s subjective experiences, individual traits, and life events. The goal is to minimize pathological thoughts that may arise in a hopeless mindset, and to, instead, develop a sense of optimism toward life.”

– Not smart enough for my parents,

How are they defining “smart”? There’s so many kinds of intelligence! Are they just looking at grades? Someone who may not be good at science might be gifted in creative writing, and we need both kinds of people in this world. Maybe your parents want you to be something you’re not interested in, so I would talk with them about their expectations.

What you are now and what you’re interested in now can change. There are so many stories of people changing careers in their lives in surprising ways, here’s one example:

Shih attended Johns Hopkins University, followed by medical school at George Washington University, then practiced for eight years as an obstetrician/gynecologist before realizing that baking, not medicine, was her calling.

“Everyone would say, ‘You’re a doctor; it must be so great to be able to save lives,’” she says. “But I felt like I was just pushing papers and feeling pressure to see more patients in less time. It was very draining. It just wasn’t fun anymore.” – Drained doctor leaves patients for pastries.

– not good enough of a sister,

What defines a good sister? I know I can improve my relationship with several family members, one of whom I have major trust issues with, but that’s a two-way street. She has to want to improve our relationship, too.

– my work is not nice enough for my teachers,

“Nice enough,” is that about art, then? I had an art teacher who, let’s just say, we had terrible chemistry! I wanted to paint Dante’s Inferno kind of things and she wanted me to do more pleasant artwork. Flowers! We reconciled eventually but you know, teachers are people, too, and you might not be able to please them all.

There are good and bad teachers out there, and teachers you just might not have good chemistry with whether they are good or bad.

– I’m not thin enough, not beautiful enough.

(As much as Lestat reminds us how gorgeous he is, I would suggest he himself doesn’t always feel so beautiful.*)

This “thin = beautiful” thing perturbs me, I’ve suffered under this delusion at various times over the years. I try not to reblog aesthetic posts perpetuating it. I feel like this “thin = beautiful” thing was perpetuated partly by:

  • Fashion designers – Their clothes should stand out, not the person wearing them, apparently, so they might prefer someone that is closer to the dimensions of a coat hanger than a person with shapes,
  • Fashion designers – It’s always easier to take a dress seam IN than LET IT OUT. So I think enough last-minute failures in designs needing to be taken in have gradually made runway models slimmer and slimmer to the point of ludicrously teensy skeleton-girls *rolls eyes*
  • Insecure men – who are intimidated by women, and would prefer to see women as more fragile so that the men can feel more masculine in comparison.
  • Insecure men – who are intimidated by women, and want women to consider themselves a second-class citizen who has to EARN affection by living in physical denial.

In some societies, bigger is beautiful! An “unhealthy” weight by one society’s standards during one time period is desirable in others: [X

^Personally, I prefer Tiziano’s “Venere di Urbino” in its original form (left), which is clearly the point Italian artist/actress Anna Utopia Giordano was making when she ‘shopped a whole bunch of these classical paintings ;D

One of my favorite posts about this says, “I wish that people viewed themselves as they viewed flowers.”

For more on this, I have a tag for advice #on beauty.

– Even in things I really put effort into.

Putting in effort alone sometimes doesn’t achieve our goals, or the effort needs to be different. Sometimes we take 2 steps back and 1 step forward in our journey to improve.

I lost 30 lbs actually, for health reasons, and my weight loss path? Not a smooth linear line! Jagged as a mountain range. There were weeks when I fell off the wagon, and had to climb up again. It took me over a year. There was more than one point where I had to start all over again. My effort was not consistent throughout. Even when it was for weeks at a time, I would hit plateaus and not make any improvement even though I was doing everything right! My Weight Watchers leader and fellow members told me that they had experienced that, too. I was relieved to hear that from them, that it was normal. The human body is organic and does not necessarily respond as you think it should to specific stimulus. Same thing with life, it’s organic.

– Do you have any advice for a desperate mortal?

These are questions that have come up for me and others at various times in life, and will continue to come up. I’ve given you some food for thought in this post, but most importantly, know that you are not alone. We can share our own experiences, as I have in this post, we can learn how to live with these questions and try to address them individually at different times in our lives.

Positive psychology has helped me immensely, but that might not work for you. If you need professional help, seek it! *hugs*

*Re: Lestat not really believing he’s so gorgeous: In my reading of VC, it seems like Lestat has struggled with not feeling good/attractive/skilled/etc. enough throughout his life and unlife. You could say, “Well, the one thing he feels totally enough about is in his physical appearance!”, but even then, I feel like it’s something of a “the lady doth protest too much”; he often reminds us how attractive he is (to the point that you sort of question if he himself really believes it?) and how fashionable he is since he grew up in poverty and has to make up for it now for eternity, but he also reveals these moments of body horror when he’s confronted with his own reflection and how much vampirism changes him through the series. So it seems like he’s insecure even in his own appearance.

Do NOT trust Anne Rice

Hello, Vampire Chronicles fans.

Sit down. We need to have a chat.

You see, while some people are very much excited for a new show about our pompous king of the assholes (and I say this as a term of endearment, having loved Lestat since I was a depressed teenager living in New York, shuffling through my mom’s fiction section) we need to pause and remember this:

Anne Rice does not support fan fiction or anything that is not glowing praise.

Read it again, slowly.

Anne Rice does not support fan fiction or anything that is not glowing praise.

This is difficult for younger fans to understand, but let’s take a walk down memory lane.

She has threatened to sue writers in the past. She is one of the most prolific writers of our generation, and she does not support people using her characters for their own work.

In fact, in 2000 she went on a binge-attack against her fans. She threatened legal action against fans who wrote or drew her characters, but especially those who wrote with them. She sent them weeks of harassing letters and doxxed them on the internet.

Let me repeat that.

She doxxed people who wrote fan fiction.

She harassed them online and threatened to contact employers.

She used her fans to outright attack other fans.

This isn’t even something she can just shake off now, with the comment of “It was so long ago” because she did this to a writer who wrote commentary on her story in 2013.

In 2013.

While it was not that she wrote fan fiction, she still shows that she has no respect for people who are in fandom.

Remember those disclaimers used in fan fics, at the beginning? “I do not own …. ”? Yeah, a lot of that has to do with the fact that Anne Rice and others like her would attack fandoms and threaten them, and was in hopes that they would just leave us alone. She didn’t.

In short: Do not trust Anne Rice. I love her writing, I have read every book she has even written, but I do not trust her.

You shouldn’t, either.

Anne Rice was and still is a bully. Don’t support her work.

She’s been like this since Geocities was the big place to have spec (that’s what fics used to be called, specs, as in speculative fiction) pages back in the mid 90s.

She use to threaten to sue anyone she found posting specs anywhere, and there was a whole underground network of people to share specs and fan art (which she also would threaten to sue over).

Anne Rice has always been kind of a twat about fan works based on her mediocre writing.

She’s harassed people quite recently. @jennytrout Wanna gossip?

What was that? “Raise your hand if you were ever personally victimized by Anne Rice?”

DISCLAIMER: this is not about fanfic, but it is about what she can do to you.

So, I totally idolized Anne Rice. Fully and adoringly so. One day, she shared one of my HuffPo articles with her “people of the page” and it was probably the greatest day of my entire career.

But she has this thing where she’s OBSESSED with bad reviews. At one point, she complained about a bad review she got for Interview from the New York Times or some such thing like forty years ago. She used it as an example of how reviews can hurt authors. I was like, seriously, lady, you have how many millions of copies of your books sold? How many movies have been made from them? *People try to find your house to take pictures of themselves in front of it.* But okay, everybody has their quirks. I just kind of rolled my eyes over it.

Not long after that, she made a post about this website that was made by a writer who apparently wasn’t getting the sales numbers or accolades they so richly deserved. The problem wasn’t like, the nature of the business or anything, nay, my friends, nay, but the fact that people–BULLIES!–left mean reviews on Amazon. So these people whom Rice so admired would make posts where they would reveal Amazon/GoodReads reviewers names and home addresses and such. One post even mentioned something like, “Between this time and that time every weekday, they go for a walk by the sea wall.” Scary, scary shit. And Rice LOVED these people.

I don’t know why I took it upon myself to argue with her. I really don’t. Maybe because I respected her so much and her support of the site was so disappointing? This was the result.

So, I’m a bully. Big whoop, right? And my feelings were a little hurt, but hey, never meet (or follow on social media) your idols, right? Lesson learned, and it wasn’t like this could destroy my fond memories of how much I loved her books, right?

So, fast forward, I think it was the next year, or at least a few months later, when I wrote a post about a dumb $0.99 Kindle book about Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings in a BDSM relationship. A pathetic little troll with too much hair gel and not enough parenting ran to his goddess Anne Rice to tell her how mean, mean, mean I was being. She posted a link to a blog post made about me on the reviews-are-bullies site and said something to the effect of someone needing to teach me a lesson or someone needed to show me how it feels or something like that. To THREE. MILLION. PEOPLE.

As a fan of Anne Rice, I am confident in stating that many of her fans are not okay people. And they heeded the command of their “queen.” Yes, they referred to her as such, flooding me with emails, tweets, FB messages, anywhere they could reach me. They posted my address, screenshots of google earth images of my house, they threatened to kill me, they made graphic threats against my children, one charming gentleman on parole from his assault sentence offered to make a necklace of my teeth to present to “my queen.”

When confronted about the fact that she had unleashed all of this on me, her response was basically:  ¯_(ツ)_/¯

She insisted she hadn’t done anything wrong, she couldn’t control what people were doing, and oh yes, it’s terrible that people are saying this, but she NEVER. ASKED. THEM. TO. STOP. In fact, she joined her “people of the page” in mocking my appearance, mourning the horrible lives my children must have, and continuing to insist that my “prison tats” indicated that I was a member of a gang (I have “TIME LADY” tattooed across my knuckles in the 11th Doctor era Doctor Who font). Egging them on with this coy, “Well, we shouldn’t say things like that, we’re better than that, BUT” bullshit.

Her “people of the page” also contacted one of my publishers and caused a multi-author anthology that was like, a year in the making to fold.

This all went on for weeks. Some of these people still occasionally pop up to threaten/antagonize. So, yeah. Steer clear. She holds a grudge, she can and will mobilize her fanbase against you, if she dislikes you she will ruin you, and she doesn’t care if her readers literally kill you.

I’ve seen this post going around and yes, I agree, do not trust Anne Rice. I get no satisfaction from adding to this post, I get no pleasure in Call Out culture, but it’s important information that needs to be shared.

The way AR sicced her zealous fans on these reviewers, her behavior was most unfortunate and beneath her. I hope it’s behind her now, but with the new series coming (maybe. *rolls eyes* it’s been 84 years) there will inevitably be less-than-glowing reviews and those reviews have a right to exist.

Another example of AR siccing her fans on a reviewer was the Punishing Pandora fiasco, in which Kayleigh Herbertson, a blogger, tore up her own physical copy of Pandora and made it into other art, which, hey! It’s her copy of the book, she should be allowed to do as she pleases with it! AR was Not Impressed with any of this project, and sicced her fans on the blogger. As

Herbertson wrote:

Edit: It has come about that this post has been shared by Anne Rice herself, leading to a lot of angry comments (though also some very thought provoking ones). Please note that I am a small scale blogger, with less that 100 followers. Whilst I’m sorry to offend the masses of Anne Rice fans now flooding my page, please keep this in mind. My original intention was to buy a beaten up book second hand to turn into craft once reading it. This happened to be Pandora. I’m sorry for not mentioning this from the word go but I can’t believe that Anne Rice has been so affronted to share this to her Facebook Page knowing how biased her fan base would be when reading my post and the result that this would cause. At this time I choose not to remove this post or the comments, the only difference is that a well-known author has singled out a single post from a tiny blog for her followers to demonize. Thank you for your time.

In my opinion, it is never acceptable to threaten to or cause real harm to real people over fictional works. We have a right to review works put out into the public domain and an author should know that they risk criticism. We have a right to buy a copy of their book and turn it into f*&’ kitty litter if we want to. That’s among our rights as a consumer of the book.

This is a VC fandom blog and I try to accentuate the positive, and encourage fanworks, etc. I try not to criticize AR herself, but this is a very important thing to inform new fans about and to keep in mind, if you lived through these times. I’ve also mentioned the war on fanfic she waged on her fans in the 90s. Not a pretty part of our fandom’s history but it happened and we should be mindful of it.

It seems like she has stopped encouraging this kind of behavior, and I hope for the sake of the fandom she will keep in mind the influence she has over her more zealous fans and continue her current attitude of ignoring what she doesn’t approve of.

captn-sara-holmes:

My class 10/10 lost the plot today. I don’t even know where to start or how to explain to their parents that I think they’ve all turned into tiny little rebels.

9:10 – we are studying a report about Chernobyl in guided reading. Several are looking at me gone out when I explain that nuclear power can be dangerous. “So why use it?” one asks. Why indeed.
9:12 – we are now discussing renewable energy. Several more express outrage and ask why the country doesn’t have to use renewable energy. Several more state that we should avoid pollution because it kills polar bears and stuff right, Miss?
9:13 – I mention that it’s a complicated issue because of different viewpoints, and that certain people, say Drumpf, don’t believe in climate change.
9:14 – chaos.
9:15 – small child suggests someone murder Drumpf. I say that murder is both bad and illegal.
9:16 – the class have learned the word impeach and are shouting IMPEACH TRUMP IMPEACH TRUMP IMPEACH TRUMP while banging on the tables.
9:17 – headteacher comes in to see what is going on. Small child tells him quite angrily that SOME PEOPLE JUST DECIDE TO NOT BELIEVE IN SCIENCE WHICH YOU CAN’T DO BECAUSE IT’S SCIENCE. He backs out of the room quite quickly.
9:25 -I have abandoned plans for grammar and the children are now writing persuasive pieces about Why We Should Use Renewable Energy.

The saga continued after lunch when we continued our WW2 topic work, learning about the holocaust.

1:35 – we are discussing Kristalnacht. The class are collectively outraged and appalled. One is in tears.
1:40 – “Miss, I fucking hate Hitler.” that’s okay, but please express your hatred of fascism without the F word or I’ll have to ring your Mum again.
2:00 – small child who suggested murder earlier says “isn’t this exactly what Drumpf tried to do to the Muslims?” There’s a heady mix of realisation and outrage in the room.
2:13 – “Racism makes no sense” says a child, looking quite confused.
2:33 – “Hitler would have killed me because I’ve got cerebral palsy, right?” says a boy. He is tackle-hugged by a girl from across the table. I have to pretend I’m not crying.
2:34 – The rest of his table have made a pact to never let anyone hurt him. I am still pretending to be super chill. I am obviously failing as another child offers me a hug.
2:37 – I ask the children to look at nine examples of things the nazis did against Jewish people, and then arrange them in a diamond with what they consider the worst at the top.
2:38 – Mutiny. They all collectively decide to arrange all nine cards in a line and say that they’re all awful things so they all go at the top.
2:39 – I tell them if they kind find a way to fit a line of all nine in their books then fair enough. Smart child suggests a circle. Everyone cheers. We have a break, and they go outside raging about Hitler, Drumpf, racism, prejudice and injustice in general. I am handed a very strong tea by my TA who congratulates me on my gang of angry eleven year olds.

Faith in humanity both challenged and restored. Bring on tomorrow.

The Vampire Chronicles Facebook Interview **Recap**(5/4/17)

bloodyvampchrons:

firelight-fading:

The Television Show

Production

  • As many know now, they will be working with Paramount Television and Anonymous Content
  • They want to stay fully engaged with fans in the production process
  • No set broadcaster, all options open (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) (Chris joked about it being on Facebook)
  • Next announcement will be when that network is decided
  • No timeline for production. They have no idea how long it will take. Script-writing is next. Chris is the one who will be script-writing, Anne will review
  • Chris: “She finished writing season 1 when she wrote the books!”
  • Pilot is done. Next are more episodes. They are starting the process and having several meetings with Paramount and Anonymous Content
  • Anne SWEARS the series will be 100% loyal to the books. (They named GoT as an example of doing this though soooooo)
  • Anne said compromises are inevitable but artistic control comes from good will
and respect; you make it work by picking people you admire and trust. They worked with Paramount and Anonymous Content since they all agreed on a common vision and the end result of the series
  • No idea about locations of sets and whatnot
  • Don’t know if they will keep with the 80’s period of the books, however Anne wants to do Lestat’s pre-vampire period period-accurate

  • Neil Jordan may end up helping out on the project

Casting

  • Still taking suggestions from fans and looking fancasts up on imdb
  • Anne: “Lestat is always shaking his fists to those who would break him down…Scrappish impish…lovable hero”
Chris: “–and he’s hot!! 😀 He’s gonna be hot. #LestatIsHot”
  • Chris and Anne might want to cameo in the series (joked about making a game out of it)
  • Some characters may change where “ethnicity is flexible”
  • Anne and Chris agree that POC being casted are important and will be
considered in casting. The Millennial vamps (older gang) will most likely
    be largely POC.
  • Anne says she has taken notice of black fans showing
their admiration of Aaliyah playing Akasha.
    • Anne gave a story about
meeting an Akasha cosplayer who mentioned that she and her friends feel
left out of high fantasy for being black and how Anne was moved by this.
  • Anne: “Akasha isn’t written as black or a person of color…she’s middle eastern”
    Me: ??? (Those aren’t…mutually exclusive???)
Anne: “–but she could be a person of color.”
  • Marius was played by a black man in the musical and Anne thought he
did a great job. Marius can be any ethnicity so long as he’s half Roman. She’d prefer to have Marius as blue eyes and blonde haired like Lestat but it’s “not imperative for him”.
  • Anne: “Louis at least has to be beautiful”
  • Armand has to look as described as well.
  • Anne wanted Cher to play Gabrielle.
  • Anne and Chris to be inclusive, but will always focus more on how fine the actor is. Talent is needed to get the role, not just looks.
  • Armand will be casted as someone who looks 17, but will be technically older. Not sure about age for
Lestat and Louis (Anne is thinking early 30s)
  • Physical and emotional aging will
be put into consideration (she gave Marius as an example as him looking like he’s in his 40s but being mentally older)

Plot and Episodes

  • They will tell the story chronologically in Lestat’s eyes so wolves-paris-so on. Basically, how knowledge unfolds for Lestat is how it will unfold for audience

THIS MAY CHANGE depending on when they talk to producers, however this is not
what they want in terms of how the events should happen.

  • Don’t want to cheat on Lestat’s life and skip out any details of it (go figure)
    • Stay faithful to the books and to Lestat’s story
  • Chris warns for us to be mindful of news that doesn’t come from official page
  • Lestat and Gabbi’s journey to be expanded
  • Origin stories of Marius and other older vampires will be shown and expanded on (done through the flashback stories Marius gives)
  • Blood and Gold will be involved but they won’t DO the story (so using that material for possible spin offs)
  • A lot about the Talamasca and especially David. Jesse too, but mostly David
    • (Anne: He’s close friends with Lestat in TOTBT
Me: Is that what you call it? lmao)
  • TVL could be 2-3 seasons. IWTV may be one. Depends
  • Anne and Chris want to know what goes wrong in the translation from book to media in other series so they can avoid it
  • They’re keeping eroticism the same as in the books.
  • Lestat turning Gabrielle will be a big scene, as they feel this is when the series starts to truly bring the
vampire world into view and Lestat really starts becoming a vampire. This scene is significant in
asking the audience what they would do in that instance. Lestat turning will also be significant.

Characters and Character Relations

  • SOMEONE FUCKING MENTIONED LOUSTAT AS THE LOUIS / LESTAT SHIP NAME AND THEY BOTH LOST IT (which one of you was it? Hm?)
  • There will be a lot about Louis and Lestat’s relationship in the series (and Lestat and Nicki)
  • Anne says she understands how important queer relationships are and how they have driven the series
  • *On expanding on other characters*
Chris: …human characters like Jesse or Daniel Mollo-
Anne: OR LESTAT WHEN HE’S HUMAN
    Me: :/
  • Anne doesn’t feel a need to make new characters.
  • More info on
    Théâtre des Vampires

and the characters in that part will expanded as well

  • Chris and Anne openly acknowledge Lestat as bisexual and this will be depicted clearly within the show
  • On the topic of Armand, what that character means to Anne will shine, so he will gain a more
sympathetic role outside of just the IWTV perspective. Both his dark side and his more childish, light-side will be shown
  • Jim Morrison of The Doors was Anne’s inspiration for Lestat’s singing voice and for the band (I forget but I think this was the song Anne named as being a good example. Though, I’m partial to their sexy song “5 to 1″). She describes Lestat’s voice as somewhere between a “barratone and tenor…Melodic”. (Something about Jon Bon Jovi also a little bit)

Mayfair Witches

  • Rights of Mayfair Witches not available to them (?) and thus, the crossover books are not a part of the VC TV series and, thus no show for them right now
  • Maybe Mayfair TV series in future. Anne doesn’t want them to play second fiddle to the vampires

Anne and Chris

  • They talked about the recent April Fool’s Joke. Anne apologized to Justin Beiber?? Why?? I don’t know (they weren’t behind the joke article)
  • Chris likes Riverdale (ew)
  • Chris worked with Anne on Ramses the Damned.
    • Someone in the VC Discord Server brought up the question of if Chris could/would carry out the VC books after Anne. Based off this interview, I think it’s very likely depending on how well the VC TV series goes. He seemed a little apprehensive about it, but he’s worked with his mother on writing and is familiar enough with her characters to care about them. I think it’s possible
  • Chris went to the VC balls in New Orleans as a kid
  • Chris’ A Density of Souls may get a chance to be a film. Chris is in discussion with someone about it (?? that’s what I got from the interview anyways)
  • *After Anne leaves to get Chris a Coke*
Chris *to the camera*: She won’t let me out of the house. She won’t let me leave!!
    Me: Same

The Facebook Page and Other Information

  • Anne, yet again, made a little speech about how nerds mean a lot to Hollywood nowadays
    • “Readers know things about the novels that are valuable”
  • They have a record of fan comments that Anne reads every so often
  • They mentioned some of the fights going on in the FB thread
    • (Chris: There are some people with…strong casting choices.
Anne: I got into fights with people lmao)
  • Anne prefers if you message her over the page rather than through emails
  • They cannot do much about given resumes and asking about jobs related to production. There will be a time for that later
  • Anne is in contract for two more VC novels. It sounded like her next novel is also included in the TV series’ contract, but I could have misinterpreted.
  • Anne asks about any regrets or things she would change from the books as she goes into the series. More fleshing out but that’s about it
  • Disappointing the fans is their biggest concern and worry

“the older gang will most likely be largely poc” that would be awesome tho. like i’m super hesitant to get excited about this thing but this sounds cool

More Vampires of Color yessss! *Grabby hands* if they want to change anything, that’s a good change that I, for one, can get behind.
