who is your favorite short term character? I personally adore baby jenks for reasons I can’t quite explain

image

Mojo. Lestat’s real son, protective of his dad and loyal, a heart of gold, and basically a living security blanket. Lestat re: Mojo, TOBT:

And before this story moves any further, let me say something about this dog. He isn’t going to do anything in this book.

He won’t save a drowning baby, or rush into a burning building to rouse the inhabitants from near-fatal sleep. He isn’t possessed by an evil spirit; he isn’t a vampire dog. He’s in this narrative simply because I found him in the snow behind that town house in Georgetown, and I loved him, and from that first moment, he seemed somehow to love me. It was all too true to the blind and merciless laws I believe in – the laws of nature, as men say; or the laws of the Savage Garden, as I call them myself. Mojo loved my strength; I loved his beauty. And nothing else ever really mattered at all.

^He’s at least a little wrong, Mojo did alot in this book. He was quietly supportive when Lestat needed it most. He saw through to Lestat’s soul, bc he recognized Lestat even though the physical appearance changed drastically ❤ So many feels for Mojo!

Runners up, or, If I Had to Choose A People: (in no special order)

  • Yvette from movie!IWTV – I headcanon her as having been raised with Louis, close to his age, and treated like a sister to him. That he was more fond of her than of his own biological sister.
  • Celeste and Estelle – Stunning vampiresses at the Theatre des Vampires who seemed to think they could paw at Claudia w/o consequences.
  • Santiago – I headcanon that he had a thing for/with Armand, maybe an unrequited crush on Armand, and then lashed out horribly when Louis came into the picture and stole Armand’s heart. Santiago has a wicked little serenade for Claudia in one of my fave fics of all time, @wicked-felina‘s First Light. #Headcanon Accepted.
  • Gretchen the nun – I just felt very inspired by the way she handled things and was saddened by the way she had to leave the story. It made sense, though.
  • Khayman – Most of his action is in QOTD so I’d consider him a short term character for that. He was a BAMF, and then later, had a real presence, and his awkwardness was so charming.
  • Tough Cookie – I mean c’mon. She’s in Lestat’s band. Or is he in her band? More about her would have been awesome.
  • Baby Jenks – Yeah I liked her alot, too! The way her narrative was written was refreshing, unlike any canon before it. Concisely stated but rich and believable backstory. She deserved to have more screentime.
  • Morgan – from IWTV, the dude who lost his wife on their honeymoon to the European vampire and ended up not lasting much longer. I really loved Louis and Claudia’s interactions with him.
  • Nicolas de Lenfent – bc of reasons, and yet, with all the love for him of late, he doesn’t feel like as much of a short term character. He can’t be described in one or two sentences so easily as the others on this list. Suffice it to say that just his name brings up my headcanons about him, and I struggle to choose one over any others, it feels like it would cheapen him to do that.

…There are more but those are the main ones that come to mind, and it’s a long enough list, so I’ll end it there.

“I wonder, could you ever turn animals into vampire-animals? Like, can you turn a cat? A dog? A lion? O.o”

In ‘Tale of the Body Thief’, Mojo goes to lick Lestat’s face and (I think) he had blood tears on his cheeks. Lestat gently pushed Mojo back and tells him he must never, never taste the blood—something similar to that, anyway.

Yes, I do remember that scene, but Lestat doesn’t make any comments in canon at that time about turning him.

I always read that moment as Mojo licking his face like he would for a normal crying human, that Mojo ignored the taste, that he did it purely to comfort his big awkward bipedal yellow puppy son ❤

[^Mojo ❤ Lestat and Lestat ❤ Mojo (Raglan James is left out bc he is icky) by @superhiki]

I just started reading this book series and I want your opinion on something (I hope the topic of sex doesn’t make you uncomfortable). According to Lestat vampires don’t feel sex drive, in The Tale of the Body Thief one of the things he wants to expierence when he has a human body is sex because he says this is something he can’t do with his vampire body. But in his book Armand mentions that he had sex with Marius several times. P.S. I love your blog, you seem really nice and cool!!!

Thanks for the compliments on my blargh! *u* I try to answer asks thoughtfully and respectfully and expect the same consideration back from whoever reads my answers ^_____^

As always, #your headcanon may vary, bc we’re talking about fictional vampires, they are not people. Whether you consider them to be people in their own world is up to you. For me, I see them as ex-people. They share a supernatural parasite that gradually eats away at their mortal parts, replacing it with its own immortal substance, perfecting their host bodies to its own design. So they exist beyond the definitions of sex and gender for me.

I do not believe the vampires are canonically capable of penetrative sex but do I love fanart/fanfic/RP where they have penetrative sex? YES, YES I DO, MORE PLZ. Have I commissioned such fanart of it for myself? Y E S. Will I commission more of it or write my own in the future? YOU’RE GOTDAMN RIGHT I WILL. I love the creativity of the fanon interpretations and I will support these ideas forever.

♥♥♥]

According to Lestat vampires don’t feel sex drive,

I don’t recall anywhere in canon where Lestat says that vampires do not feel a sex drive. He has described himself as a sensualist, and we know he falls in love easily. I think that they do feel a sex drive, just not in the genitally-penetrative sex way (not the most eloquent phrasing there but I can’t think of another way to put it; “PIV/penis-in-vagina” just doesn’t apply to most of our gay ships).

Turning vampires seems to be their ultimate “sexual” act that they can perform, bc it is equivalent to pregnancy (a fledgling is being “born to darkness”), and it is always described primarily as the sharing of the Blood between maker and fledgling. I headcanon that Lestat loves the act of performing this, and that’s partly why he has had SO MANY FLEDGLINGS. So I believe that they still do feel sexual lust, it’s channeled through the experience of taking/sharing blood, and other sensually physical things.

In fanon there is a wide spectrum of whether they can have genitally-penetrative sex, some even speculate that their um… output… would be very bloody. There is fanart/fanfics/RP/etc. in which they can have that kind of sex, and ones in which they cannot.

in The Tale of the Body Thief one of the things he wants to expierence when he has a human body is sex because he says this is something he can’t do with his vampire body.

^This is up to every reader’s interpretation, and yes, in my opinion, Ricean vampires in canon cannot have penetrative sex. My main evidence for them as being unable to have genitally-penetrative sex comes from [hit the jump for spoilers].

AR has written alot of other novels with genitally-penetrative sex being an important factor, so I doubt it was an oversight in denying it to her vampires. If you want to go by her as the authority on her novels, and many ppl do, she posted definitively about it when asked about Daniel and Marius in PL:

image

AR does not go into much further detail than that, even in canon, other than the fact that the sharing of blood is more intimate for them than than simple mortal penetrative sex. Part of why she chose this may be to avoid the issue of pregnancy the way mortals do it; a baby cannot grow in undead flesh, y’know?

TL;DR: Personally, I headcanon them as unable to have genitally-penetrative sex. There are human couples who are unable (or do not want) to experience genitally-penetrative sex, and they can still be sexually intimate with each other in other ways. So it’s partly in how you define sex and intimacy.

For more on this, I have these tags: #asexuality, #asexual, #sex, #sexuality, #lets talk about sex.

Hit the jump for spoilers.

But in his book Armand mentions that he had sex with Marius several times.

Armand was mortal for some of that book, and Marius did sexual things with him, but not genitally-penetrative sex. After Armand is turned, Marius and Armand have an intimate moment with a mortal woman together, but again, it is not genitally-penetrative sex for them.

My main evidence for them as being unable to have genitally-penetrative sex comes from:

  • Louis’s description of sex in IWTV:

Claudia asks Louis about sex in IWTV, and he replies that it “‘…was something hurried…And… it was seldom savored… something acute that was quickly lost. I think that it was the pale shadow of killing.’”

^He’s talking about it as occurring in the past, I think he means when he was mortal. Here he says it’s not equivalent to the act of taking blood from a victim, sex is a lesser experience for him.

  • Lestat’s description of his non-functioning Priapus in QOTD:

“I studied my reflection … and the organ, the organ we don’t need, poised as if ready for what it would never again know how to do or want to do, marble, a Priapus at a gate” – Lestat, Queen of the Damned

^This quote has been interpreted over and over again as meaning many things, one of which being that the vampires have a permanent boner, which I disagree with. I highly doubt Louis, someone with a lot of dignity, would be fine with walking around for eternity with a permanent boner. I blame this misunderstanding on the translators who translated “poised” to “erect” in various other languages.

I interpret that quote as meaning that his Priapus is just “waiting.”

  • and Pandora’s description of Marius’ non-functioning (but very hard) dick in her book. Pandora wants Marius to sex her up on their ‘wedding night’ and he can’t do it, but they try, awkwardly:

He covered me and kissed my cheek. “Drink from me,” he said, “drink until the pain goes away. It’s only the body dying, drink Pandora, you are immortal.“
“Fill me, take me,” I said. I reached down between his legs.
“It doesn’t matter now.”
But it was hard, this organ I sought, the organ forever lost to the god Osiris. I guided it, hard and cold as it was, into my body. Then I drank and drank, and when I felt his teeth again on my neck, when he began to draw from me the new mixture that filled my veins, it was sweet suckling, and I knew him and loved him and knew all his secrets in one flash which meant nothing.  He was right. The lower organs meant nothing. He fed on me. I fed on him. This was our marriage. Pandora

I think AR is telling us that in order to be immortal, a great sacrifice must be made. Not just outliving your loved ones, food and drink, sunlight, and your appearance being altered. For many people, sex is as necessary to life as eating and breathing. To give that up for eternity is a huge sacrifice, but, you do get super powers an immortality. Fair trade?

superhiki:

In Body Thief, I loved how David’s ability to read minds was also a bit of a curse as the mind he read was Lestat’s…

I had this sketch sitting around forever so I slapped color on it and here we are! I’m still not 100% with Ragland James’/Lestat’s body (I think he’s too slight of build) but I’m pleased with David, ahahaha.

ok but when is Lestat NOT thinking about banging his fave ppl?

So we reach into the raging chaos, and we pluck some small glittering thing, and we cling to it, and tell ourselves it has meaning, and that the world is good, and we are not evil, and we will all go home in the end

The Tale of the Body Thief, by Anne Rice (via vampchronfic)

mannimations:

Just love this SO MUCH. By Florbe91.deviantart.com. From Tale of the Body Thief, by Anne Rice (DUH, do I post anything ELSE EVER??!!)

Do you think Louis would/could have refused Lestat forever?

This particular fanart is one of my absolute all-time favorites. The expression florbe achieves here is so strong, the staging of the frames, the subtlety of the colors is perfection, the whole thing tears at your heartstrings almost more than the scene in the book does! I’d love to buy a whole graphic novel in this style ❤

So I had posted this a million (three) years ago, back before this blog was this blog, back when it was “mannimations,” and that was before I knew how to link things in a nice way, but more relevant than belitting my former lack of etiquette is that at that time, this image was hosted on florbe91’s deviantart page.

Since then, she has taken it down, and many other of her VC fanarts, for her own reasons. There are a few still there if you look for them, a fraction of what had been posted. She took the rest down for her own reasons, none of which were bc of AR.

The primary reason I’m writing this now and reblogging smtg that she took down, against my own policy, is to let you know why I try not to reblog her VC fanart* when I see it on my dash currently. As much as I absolutely adore it, I respect her choice not to share it.

Secondly, when you see fanart that you adore, download it! Keep it for your own private records. Artists can remove things at any time, and there may not be any warning. I’m an artist, and I have removed posts from here.

*The exception to my rule is if the fanart in question is publicly available (at the time of reblogging) on her deviantart or tumblr, in which case it seems to be okay to share, or in this case where I’m making a general note.

do lestat and louis actually date in the books this is a srs question pls answer

No, they don’t really date in canon *cries* You gotta read between the lines!

image

[^from Mad Magazine. Date night used to involve getting all dolled up, sharing a nice French “wine” and then pretending to eat dinner and this is where alot of my sense of humor originally came from btw]

They had a very intense and rocky beginning that seemed to skip over the dating phase directly to marriage, then parenting, and then the separation for around 100 years.

I wouldn’t say they “date” in canon in the conventional sense of the word. There are certain moments they have together like that heartbreaking little scene when they met the night before Lestat’s concert (TVL), and another time when Lestat drags Louis against his will to go pester David Talbot for the first time (QOTD) 😛

You might like my #Another typical night at the Rue Royale tag for some date-y stuff.

…But in a more general sense, they do sort of Netflix and chill together. From Tale of the Body Thief:

“It’s amazing how often he came to visit me in my overheated and brilliantly illuminated rooms downtown. There he watched my giant television screen for hours. Sometimes he brought his own films for it on disk or tape. The Company of Wolves, that was one which he watched over and over… There were many other films which delighted him. But these visits could never be commanded by me, and they never lasted very long. He often deplored the “rank materialism” in which I “wallowed” and turned his back on my velvet cushions and thickly carpeted floor, and lavish marble bath. He drifted off again, to his forlorn and vine-covered shack.”

Sadly, both Louis and Lestat don’t kiss and tell much when it comes to their romantic interactions. There’s alot of Lestat pining for Louis, bc (in the immortal words of @hyperbeeb#nobody ships Louis and Lestat harder than Lestat ships Louis and Lestat…

You’d think, for one of the fandom’s main ships, there would be more of it explicitly canon. There just isn’t, sadly. Part of why it’s such a tough ship is that AR just does not let us have much in terms of fluff of them! It mostly happens off-screen. Which is where fanfic steps in to satisfy that need ;]

So Lestat had Mojo. What animals do you see the other vampire’s gravitating to?

Louis@merciful-death’s Louis has a black cat named Harriet (#headcanon accepted!). She leaves him dead mice often, and according to Lestat (@devilsfool): “She hunts them to try to feed you. She’s convinced that you are a terrible hunter.”

image

[^X]

Harriet’s first snow! Harriet was a fierce and successful huntress from an early age, trying her best to keep Louis fed ❤

image

[^X]

I also see Louis as being visited frequently by a big stray tomcat, and Lestat doesn’t approve of this one either bc MORE CAT HAIR ON VELVET FURNITURE. Velvet is very cat-hair-ophillic. This cat doesn’t have a name but Louis calls him by a lot of baby names (”Mon chou,” “Sir Fluff,” “Kitten,”) and Lestat calls him by a lot of rude names (”Hairball,” “Trashface,” “Loaf”). This cat actually followed Harriet to their home one night, and he likes to nap with her when she allows it.

Lestat – I know you didn’t ask about Lestat but I have to include him a little more! According to @annabellioncourt, “Lestat was also a canon dog person, and while there are people who love both (hi) I think with Lestat’s constant need for validation he’d be a total dog person.

Like no cats at all.

He hissed back at Louis’s cat once.

Lestat almost always has a dog, and he has meticulous memory of all the dogs he ever had.“

^#headcanon accepted.

Daniel – Lizards! Frogs! Snakes! Reptiles in general. Also insects. He has a big pinned collection, featuring gorgeous butterflies and buprestidae. Lestat loves this collection and goes to reptile houses with Daniel on occasion. They both love cobras.

Armand – I can’t find the canon evidence but I’m pretty sure he had big fancy aquariums on Night Island.

[X] Armand is truly fascinated with owls, owls are totes his spirit animal, deceptively powerful in their small size. Their symbolism for intelligence and careful planning. And y’know, they’re basically "flying pillows filled with seething hatred.” like Armand!

Hit the jump for a bit more.

Marius had taxidermied animals: “giant stuffed beasts mounted in lifelike attitudes – the brown bear, the lion, the tiger, even the elephant standing in his own immense chamber, lizards as big as dragons, birds of prey clutching dried branches made to look like the limbs of real trees.” -TVL

Marius also had a “giant aquarium, the great room-sized tank” filled w/ “rare and beautiful tropical fish” and caged birds. – QOTD

Claudia loved birds, especially small ones. She likes songbirds especially. She also loved rabbits but more for their fur than their personality.

HEYYYYY MY DEAR I have a question. Do Louis and Lestat ever put makeup on eachother? And if they do, who prefers what style of makeup? (Like Lestat likes a winged eyeliner on Louis etc)

Yes, definitely! Lestat wears makeup often, typically at least guyliner (black or dark blue) and a lightweight (as in, not too “gluey”), organic lipgloss, with a rosy tint. Neither of them typically wear makeup that’s very scented or flavored, since they find those pretty chemically distasteful.

It’s canon that Lestat wears violet shades much of the time, which are not opaque, tinted just enough to diffuse a little of the dazzling effect of his eye color but allow the artistry of his makeup to be visible.

Louis will not put on makeup unless Lestat requests it, but does admit that it gives him an otherworldly quality. He prefers a light smokey eye and a hint of blush.

Despite his strenuous efforts to improve, Lestat is not as talented at drawing winged eyeliner, so whenever he wants that look he has to ask Louis to do it for him. Lestat also really enjoys playing w/ metallic powders [X]:

image

Sometimes Lestat will see a look in a work of art, magazine, or movie, and he wants to try it out on himself or Louis. He’s copied several of David Bowie’s looks. Some nights they both get all glamorous in order to better entice victims (murderous transphobic/homophobic bigots are a favorite dinner).

image

Louis’ first makeover was done by Claudia (fanart by @obsessional-ram!), and he resisted at first, but it was a battle he couldn’t hope to win as she pushed him down to her level and began applying foundation and eyeshadow primer. She went for an orchid-inspired look, w/ pastel shades and then deepened the contrast with his eyes with teal green and gold eyeshadow colors, a cool-toned smokey overlay, mascara, and warm lavender blush. A deep berry lip tint completed the look.

She also braided tiny light-colored flowers into his hair, and put him in one of the maid’s dresses.

When Lestat came out of the bath, where he had been for about an hour, he was struck by the enhancements and made some mumbled excuse as to why he needed Louis’ attention immediately… and privately. Claudia was very proud of herself for producing such a positive reaction, even though on the surface she kicked and complained at being thrown out of the house on an obviously unnecessary errand “Go get us more… ah… matches! From across town!”

The very next night, Lestat had her try out bold eyeshadows and powders on himself ;D

In canon, Lestat wears makeup at least for camouflage:

“I covered up my blue eyes, as always, with black glasses, lest their radiance mesmerize and entrance at random – a real nuisance – and over my delicate white hands, with their telltale glassy fingernails, I drew the usual pair of soft gray leather gloves.”  – Tale of the Body Thief

“Ah, a bit of oily brown camouflage for the skin. I smoothed the lotion over my cheekbones, over the bit of neck and chest that was bare.”

Tale of the Body Thief
