That Nicolas ask made me curious.. Do you have any headcanons about what any of the characters’ voices sound like?

That’s a really tough question! When I read the books I read them all in MY voice, which sounds like an 11 yr old girl’s. So that wouldn’t work.

Probably gonna get alot of disagreement on this and that’s fine, bc voice casting is even MORE subjective that acting casting but I’ll give it a shot anyway. Reblog w/ your own ideas, and try to include links to vids.

Lestat – His voice is actually not that low, bc he was turned at 20-21, but it gets higher-pitched when he raises his voice. Has that slightly ragged singer’s voice edge to it. Can do a wide range, though, can imitate voices, musical notes, animal sounds, etc. Usually to perturb others.

Lestat will go up to Armand and say something like, “Ooooh Marius, paint me like one of your Italian boysssss…” in Armand’s voice which is always amusing, whatever reaction he gets.

Other than Tom Cruise (bc he’d be the easy answer), I’m gonna go w/ Sebastian Bach in the 80’s. Or Ewan McGregor in Velvet Goldmine.

Hit the jump for more.

(I didn’t include PL characters for the sake of brevity)(You can add them in the comments)(I also didn’t find good vid examples for all of these, sorries)

Louis – A mellow, calming voice. He can silence a room with a concise and gentlemanly eloquent statement. In canon, it’s mentioned more than once that you can hear his French accent. He himself doesn’t notice it, of course, bc he’s Mr. Pointe du Lacking-Any-Vanity-Whatsoever. Louis Garrel would be a good pick.

Armand – I’ve always felt like the Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan was very Armand in his singing voice, he has all the anguish and beauty that is Armand. In his speaking voice, it’s soft, and you can hear something broken there, but it’s smooth, controlled.

Daniel – Has a slight vocal growl, like River Phoenix (Or maybe Aaron Tveit), and altho he has a relatively low voice, he’ll always sound like he’s 20 on the phone.

MariusMichael Fassbender, @sheepskeleton made me see it and I can’t unsee it. A commanding but gentle teacher’s voice.

David – As an old man, he had that perfect older Dad-vibe; comforting, ex-adventurer, wise, with more than a touch of charming sass. So Kurt Russell would be a good voice, but he needs the noticeable British accent.

post-TOBT David is David Gandy. He’s got the British voice, the charm, etc.! Young or old, David’s laugh is that old-man whiskey laugh, mostly air!

Gabrielle – She has a dignity about her and it comes through in her voice. Her laughter sparkles, but it’s rare. She has a very commanding Mom Voice, the kind where she can yell w/o raising her voice. Gonna go with fan favorite Charlize Theron. Or Nicole Kidman, or Michelle Pfeiffer, obviously, too.

BiancaScarlett Johansson. @everlastingporcelain has convinced me that Scarlett = Bianca and I can’t unsee/hear it. Sass, charm, vocal growl, wholesomeness, and an advanced maturity.

Once you taste this, you’ll never go to another tavern again get it? she was gonna poison them she is an evildoer so don’t feel bad for her ok bye.

oh my god she was going to poison them?????

Well in TVL, Lestat talks about how he chooses his victims:

“When [Louis] says I played with innocent strangers, befriending them and then killing them, how was he to know that I hunted almost exclusively among the gamblers, the thieves, and the killers, being more faithful to my unspoken vow to kill the evildoer than even I had hoped I would be? …The whores I feasted upon in front of Louis once, to spite him, had drugged and robbed many a seaman who was never seen alive again.”

So he’s referring specifically to the ones he kills later, but this victim’s line, it seems to me, is implication that she intends to kill them, hence, they’ll “never go to another tavern again.”

Unless she’s really that confident about her tavern’s liquor, in which case, she means they’ll ONLY go to her tavern from now on! But I doubt that, in the context of Lestat’s ability to read minds and his usual aim for evildoers.

In your mind, who do you think are the right person(s) to play Nicki? As an adult

As usual, I gotta say that it’s not JUST about appearance, so I’m open to suggestions, and it would need to be someone who can make the transition between mortal and vampire really well.

THAT SAID: I would be looking for someone close to their 20’s, or looks like it, with luscious dark hair, A+ artist brooding skills, a smile that can melt your heart, and an almost feral edge, this is not your boy-next-door, but someone w/ razor sharp wit ever at the ready to stab you with, but he keeps it back as much as he can. Leashed cruelty.

Major plus if they can play violin, too, bc I know ppl are going to be watching their damn fingering and will criticize them up and down, even if they get training with it, bc violinning is such a huge part of that character.

Some ideas (in no particular order), and there are more in my #Nicolas de Lenfent tag, I’m just picking some favorites here:

Young Hugh Dancy:

So Hugh Dancy is not this age anymore, but we could find someone who resembled him at this time, as a starting-off point.

90’s!Trent Reznor:

Same comment as for Hugh. Must be someone out there who looks like Trent did at this age. Trent could look like an almost-feminine beautiful mess,

And he could look like he was barely tolerating your idiocy:

Do u ever not realize how starved for affection u are till someone hugs u a bit tighter than normal and you find that you really don’t want to let go

I never thought about this scene in this context before, and I don’t know if you were going for seriousness or not, but by this point in the both the film and the novel, Lestat hadn’t had any real affection other than the baiting of the musician for some time.

Thanks! I was indeed going for serious. They have actual irreconcilable differences, but they both still desperately miss how it was in the beginning, when they could both be free to live under the delusion that this setup was in any shape or form “natural" and sustainable. It was the honey-est of honeymoons, for all of them. One happy family.

Claudia was the glue that held them all together, so when she understood the truth of it all and severed ties with Lestat, that’s around when Louis must have, to some extent, as well. In the book, he seems to pull away from both of them emotionally as her frustration and disillusionment grows.

So yes, by this point, Lestat hadn’t had any real affection (aside from the flirting w/ strangers we all know he’s so talented at) other than the baiting of the musician for some time. It appeared that the love between Lestat and the musician was a pale shadow of what he had with Louis and Claudia. That musician seemed to give him the kind of unconditional love that Lestat’s dogs had given him back in the Auvergne. An unquestioning loyalty, which is good, but love from Louis and Claudia was worth more, which is why he didn’t just leave them immediately, but rather stay and taunt them with the idea that he might turn someone else. He was challenging them to fight for his love, in threatening to replace them, he wanted them to beg him to stay. They didn’t.

You a real body goals

Aw thank u! I kind of regret bringing it up, but the flesh is always better on the other side of the window… oui?

image

Real talk here, though: I love that they chose a realistic woman for Claudia to want to be, not some stick-figure blonde. Later, the lady killed on stage at the Theatre Des Vampires is more like that ideal, society’s projected perfection, but we’re not talking about her right now. This woman has kind of unusual boobs, as far as what we normally see in film, these are natural boobs, not hiked up in a bra to conform to some kind of perky ideal, and this woman has an actual tummy, maybe she’s had children, maybe she’s pregnant, either way, she appears to have FLESH THAT FUNCTIONS and is natural. “Pure Creole” as Lestat says appreciatively. And she’s kind of humming to herself, doing some kind of treatment to her body, just at peace with herself and the world, it seems. Claudia wants ALL of that.

image

Later, we see Claudia humming (the same tune?!) as she draws from this model trying to achieve that same inner peace. Why do artists art? One reason is they’re trying to capture an ideal and/or something ephemeral, something that brings peace when you can put it down on paper. Writing can achieve that, too, as can making music, as can all the creative arts.

That’s definitely part of why I’m an artist. It’s a burning need to capture and become something through the creative act. An evolution of sorts.

You see why I’m trapped in this fandom? It touches on everything! I can never leave.

mortisia:

Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst in Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)

I love this production still for so many reasons but one of them definitely is that Louis isn’t really able to protect Claudia while she’s holding his arm down; she’s put herself in front of him, she’s actually trying to shield him from the flailing-around-on-fire-vampire in the room. Louis probably feels extra guilty for setting Lestat on fire but he had to choose sides, and he’s chosen Claudia and freedom.

#seriously tho #claudia #darling #love of my life #i can’t protect u if youre gonna hold my arms down ok #i need them free to throw oil lamps around #just fyi

Regarding the Nicki audio, it’s originally from an interview given to a french channel by ballet dancer Jonathan Klein, who took part in a french talent show competition around 2012. You can find the video the audio was taken from here: https://you tu.be/Rwl21dY2934

^While this guy does not look like my headcanon Nicolas de Lenfent, he DOES have a lovely voice, he can play Nicki in the VC animated series *u*

do ya have like a cast for thhe books?? like who do u think would play which character?? love u and your blog btw it’s so perfect and gives me life every day <333

First of all thank you for such a lovely compliment! THAT MEANS ALOT AND YOU MEAN ALOT.

I made this the blog I wanted to find when I was looking for VC fandom action. People like you who follow it and love it and tell me so, you give me life.

*cries a little bc of the feels*

AHEM okay, *straightens up* so, as far as VC casting, I was asked this awhile back and I still haven’t been able to answer, and couldn’t figure out why I was feeling speechless about it. That’s why I’m attempting to answer now, with this “I can’t answer!” answer. Why not? Why can’t I seem to motivate myself to do a full VC cast when it would be a fun thing to attempt?? After some introspection…

Short answer is:

  1. When you say ALL, there are so many characters to consider I get overwhelmed,
  2. I have a relatively open mind, which means I might consider ppl who may not “look the part,”**
  3. And there are ppl from different eras who are too old now who I WOULD HAVE WANTED SO MUCH.
  4. I prefer fanart of the characters over a lot of the current actors available. Check my #fave tag for my faves ^_____^

(**After all, AR was vociferous about Tom Cruise not “looking the part” but then when she saw his performance she praised him to high heaven; showing us all that it’s somewhat unfair not to give an actor the chance to prove his craft, that he’s more than his physical attributes.

Really phenomenal acting transcends physical appearance, it can even alter physical appearance within one scene.

Also isn’t that Hamilton Musical doing great w/ race-swapped characters? So that’s another consideration, too.)

That’s the abridged gist of it :- so check my #vc casting tag, it has a wide variety of character options to peruse (some were submitted or suggested to me, some I’ve offered up for consideration) and my opinions about them *u*

Hit the jump for the long-windier reasons why “I can’t answer!”

1 – There are TONS of characters in VC, I mean, do you want to go into minor characters, as far as like, that mortal Emily who was already dead in IWTV, killed by that zombie vampire, and her bereft spouse/fiancé/boyfriend Morgan (I think that was his name, can’t check rn)? Arjun? Is he a minor character? Not in Pandora’s book, but he’s hardly sketched out in Blood and Gold.

There are a lot of characters and honestly if I were to do a post like that, I would want to be very thorough, with notes backing my reasons, it would be a REALLY long post, possibly need to be done in several parts, it would take hours, and it would probably be met with like 5 likes, 2 reblogs, and possibly a bunch of disagreement 😦

While I don’t post things For the Notes, when I’m going to invest a good chunk of my time in a fandom Thing, I do it for something I can’t resist doing bc I care about it deeply, or it’s for someone I know specifically, or it’s something hilarious that I have a pretty good feeling will amuse my kind of people.

I did this long post about casting Rose de Lioncourt, and it got 16 notes, so it seeeeems like ppl didn’t really care enough about her, and it took me at least an hour to put that together, it was basically a labor of love from me since I cared about it deeply enough. *shrugs*

VC casting is fun to discuss but bc we had such a terrible experience with QOTD, and there’s been little news of another adaptation, it’s hard to get REALLY excited about ;n;

2 – So as I said, I’m really generous with actors, so I have trouble picking just ONE per role, I would need them to screentest!

It also depends on their combinations with other actors and which story the director has chosen to tell. For example, whoever is cast as Louis has to work well with be really gay with whoever is cast as Lestat *u* BUT they have a very different relationship in IWTV than they do in TOBT.

Same goes for casting someone like Armand, if we’re telling the story of TVA, the actor will need to be able to show the evolution from mortal to vampire, and a lot of other major changes in his life and unlife. But if it’s QOTD, it’s not Armand’s story specifically, but his role is more about his relationship with Daniel. That affects the casting choice.

3 – A lot of singers from the 90’s, or 80’s, or even earlier, would make fantastic Lestats.

I would hope that the next VC movie shows Lestat as Monsieur Le Rockstar, if not on stage, at least working something out privately at home, and actually singing lyrics that are not terrible, lol. I would want a Lestat who can sing, since it’s such a huge part of his identity as a performer.

Also, that Björn Andrésen is pretty much my purest headcanon for Armand, but alas, that actor is 61 now ;A;

With actors who are too old, we can use them as a point of inspiration, casting agents probably take kid!pics of adult actors in order to find a point of inspiration when they need to cast the child version of those actors in films.

4 – The fanart in our fandom is incredible. So much of it! We are spoiled with so many fandom treasures in our fanartist collection. We have hilarious fanartists, serious ones, all flavors. Check my #fave tag for my faves ^_____^

Ok so I’ve only read IWTV and I was obviously captured by it and cried more than once haha. I saw the movie years before and only recently read the book. But I didn’t really pick up on the emotional connection to Lestat that you always elaborate on.. I totally see Lestats obsession with Louis, that much is obvious. But throughout IWTV, Louis seems to range from hatred to disinterest, to pity, with no real love besides the initial wonder. Is this b/c I only read the first one? Or whats your take?

i-want-my-iwtv:

So Louis’ emotional connection to Lestat, and the fact that it wasn’t really visible in IWTV.

The really short answer is that I believe in Louis’ love for Lestat so much that I can’t quite pinpoint the evidence for it! I think it’s from reading further books and seeing Louis from other ppls’ POV, who can describe his love better than he might be able to admit.

“Louis, the watcher, the patient one, was there on account of love pure and simple. The two had found each other only last night, and theirs had been an extraordinary reunion. Louis would go where Lestat led him. Louis would perish if Lestat perished.” – Khayman, Queen of the Damned.

image

TL;DR: You gonna have to read The Vampire Lestat to get that connection.

These are actually pretty appropriate here:

So, yes, I think you’re somewhat right when you say that in book!IWTV and movie!IWTV, it seems like the only feelings Louis has for Lestat are:

  • a “range from hatred
  • to disinterest,
  • to pity,
  • with no real love besides the initial wonder.”

Louis is baffled by a lot of the things Lestat does in IWTV, he disagrees with Lestat’s philosophy (which is unclear in IWTV in both versions), and until Claudia rebels against their maker, Louis stays with Lestat because YES, he is still fascinated with him, he doesn’t know of any other vampires, and he’s sure he can pull more of the mysteries of life out of Lestat about vampiring, and his place in the scheme of things (whether vampires work for God or Satan is a big question).

image

^At the end of IWTV, Louis does meet up with a very incapacitated Lestat. Lestat says in the next book that this scene never happened.

Whether they met like this or not, Louis clearly is “empty” at the end of IWTV, and he wants to find Lestat, but how’s he going to do that? Check the Yellow Pages? It would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

IWTV is like a Batsignal from Louis to Lestat to call him out of wherever he’s hiding. Some of the story is embellished (or maybe even invented) to paint Lestat as a bizarre antagonist. This is all to get him ANGRY ENOUGH to rise up out of hiding and FIND LOUIS. Whether to retaliate physically, and finally end Louis’ misery, or correct the record by putting out HIS side of the story, and everything he couldn’t tell Louis during IWTV.

Which is exactly what The Vampire Lestat is, and that’s why you need to read it ❤

I forgot to mention that there is some fanon that Louis had never been with a man romantically (or only with one) before Lestat, and being religious, that would have been a huge sin, too. As bad as killing? Idk, but high up there on the scale of being bad. So he may not want to admit to the gay feelings he has for Lestat, and has had, for the 70-some years they were together.

image

^I feel like, even though this is Claudia’s line, we’re watching Louis’ reaction bc he’s about to lose her, and he’s also thinking about how he’s lost Lestat ;A;

Louis does mention in IWTV missing Lestat when he and Claudia are free of him:

“I wanted to forget -him, and yet it seemed I thought of him always. It was as if the empty nights were made for thinking of him. And sometimes I found myself so vividly aware of him it was as if he had only just left the room and the ring of his voice were still there. And somehow there was a disturbing comfort in that… I wanted him alive!”

Lestat also tells us in TVL to read between Louis’ lines in IWTV:

“And why should I bother to tell of the times [Louis] came to me in wretched anxiety, begging me never to leave him, of the times we walked together and talked together, acted Shakespeare together for Claudia’s amusement, or went arm in arm to hunt the riverfront taverns or to waltz with the dark-skinned beauties of the celebrated quadroon balls?

Read between the lines.

… he told the truth about the eerie contentment he and Claudia and I shared…”

Ok so I’ve only read IWTV and I was obviously captured by it and cried more than once haha. I saw the movie years before and only recently read the book. But I didn’t really pick up on the emotional connection to Lestat that you always elaborate on.. I totally see Lestats obsession with Louis, that much is obvious.
