Let’s talk about vampires and bubble gum. Can they have it? Do you think they like it? I bet Lestat discovers it and starts trying like EVERY flavor (though he has certain favorites).

I think vampires would be curious about it, even if it existed during their lifetime (definitely for Daniel), there are new flavors, shapes and sizes of gum these days!

image

[^Quote from @goddessofidiocy]

As far as actually enjoying gum, idk, I’m of two minds with that. On the one hand, I like the idea of Lestat doing it just to irritate ppl, blowing big bubbles, and popping them while someone is trying to talk *cough* Armand *cough* I’m sure he would find all the packaging/tins and

gumball machines graphically appealing.

On the other hand, I had an ask about whether they’d wear chapstick and I wrote:

The flavored makeup would probably not taste good to them like it does for us since those flavors are meant to simulate actual food; cherry chapstick – which I personally love bc it gives you tint and a pleasant smell/taste – would probably taste like a smear of motor oil to a Ricean vampire.

Soooo… I feel like gum, also meant to taste like food to mortals, could taste inedible to them. Altho even if it tasted bad, I think Lestat would still chew it just to be annoying #Actual 7 yr old.

I’m going to be roleplaying with someone and they want to do a mother/son relationship, like not in the usual way. Like, what is the ACTUAL relationship between Gabrielle and Lestat? What is it really? I want to do a thread, but I don’t want to trigger anyone or make it look all grim and incestuous. And I sincerely apologize if I’ve offended you by asking the question. I just dunno.

[By the way, I usually answer things with a relevant fanart/image/gif, but in this case, I think it’s too serious a topic for that.]

  • “And I sincerely apologize if I’ve offended you by asking the question.”

No offense taken, it’s a fair question!

I am a little wary that this is a bait set out by those who see things in RP/fiction as “promoting” something in real life. A bait set to invite the kind of anti-shippers who are looking for a way to tear me down regardless of how I respond, when all I ever want to promote is:

The 3 Laws of Fandom.

(And I’ll quote a relevant piece of it from @ozhawkauthor, but please read the whole post):

“Much (though not all) fandom is about shipping. There are as many possible ships as there are fans, maybe more. You may have an OTP (One True Pairing), you may have a NOTP, that pairing that makes you want to barf at the very thought of its existence.

It’s not up to you to police ships or to determine what other people are allowed to ship. Just because you find that one particular ship problematic or disgusting, does not mean that other people are not allowed to explore its possibilities in their fanworks.

You are free to create contrarian content, to write meta about why a particular ship is repulsive, to discuss it endlessly on your private blog with like-minded persons.

It is not appropriate to harass creators about their ships, it is not appropriate to demand they do not create any more fanworks about those ships, or that they create fanwork only in a manner that you deem appropriate.

These three laws add up to the following:

You are not paying for fanworks content, and you have no rights to it other than to choose to consume it, or not consume it. If you do choose to consume it, do not then attack the creator if it wasn’t to your taste. That’s the height of bad manners.

Be courteous in fandom. It makes the whole experience better for all of us.”

I want to make it very clear that I’m answering this as someone who supports exploring dark themes and taboo topics in fiction/RP. As long as you are not violating real living person’s rights, or invading any real living person’s space*, then you are doing nothing wrong.

I’ve been blocked. I try to tag for things that can be triggering/upsetting to others, but I will not self-censor to appease everyone, so I absolutely support ppl unfollowing/blocking me if what I post makes them uncomfortable.

*Posting your fic/RP with the appropriate warning tags is a form of respecting others’ space and rights. If they don’t like your writing, they can block you, too. Their dashboard is their responsibility.

  • “I want to do a thread, but I don’t want to trigger anyone or make it look all grim and incestuous.”

I think grim and incestuous could be very interesting to explore; not every fic/RP can be a fluffy Coffee Shop AU!

Re: Concern about triggering anyone, I’ll repeat myself, it is everyone’s responsibility to curate their own fandom experience and as long as you are tagging and putting content under cuts, it is their responsibility to protect themselves. If they are incapable of that, then they should ask a trusted person to monitor their internet use.

People are triggered by many things, not just taboo and darker themed writing. This person’s triggers are Jello, Popsicles, Soup Broth, please read it! And to quote from that post, “a lot of ‘activists’ on tumblr aren’t looking to actually help anyone or make anything better: they’re sadists cruising for new victims.”

TL; DR: Anon, do what you and your partner are comfortable doing.** If RPing it as a ship squicks you both out, don’t do it. If Rping it as a ship is exciting to you both and you want to explore that taboo, go for it! Just be sure to tag it with the right warnings, and add cuts so that ppl will be protected from content they may not want to see. You can also RP privately however you like, there is no rule that says RP must be done publicly.

**If your RP partner is pressuring you to RP something you are uncomfortable with, then I would suggest not RPing that with them, and similarly, if you are pressuring your RP partner to RP something they are uncomfortable with, I would suggest not pressuring them into it.

Hit the jump for my response, cut for length, and discussion about possible incest between fictional characters.

  • “I’m going to be roleplaying with someone and they want to do a mother/son relationship, like not in the usual way.”

Is there a “usual way” to RP? If you’re suggesting in the ship way, it is something I’m sure exists.

Ppl RP with canon in mind, or without it.

  • “Like, what is the ACTUAL relationship between Gabrielle and Lestat? What is it really?”

That is a question with a ton of landmines, so I’m not going to say that they are definitely a ship or definitely not, it’s up to the individual reader/RPer to decide based on their reading of canon, or diverge from canon and write the characters however they see fit. This kind of exploration is one of many ways to engage with the characters and I see nothing wrong with canon-compliant or not canon-compliant writing, either way.

Personally, I can see both sides of the argument.

>>Not as a ship: There are some who see them purely as a mother and a son, and DEFINITELY nothing more. She does come to his rescue at the rock concert (how did she know to go to him? She has telepathy, but being his fledgling, she cannot read Lestat’s mind; she could have picked up the warnings from other vampires, or Louis might have contacted her), there are several times in canon when she asserts herself in an authoritative manner. She’s protective of him when he’s in a coma, and she slaps some sense into him when necessary. All these things can be filed under “motherly.”

It’s easy to not ship them, so I don’t really need to provide further canon evidence, they are, biologically, mother and son! There’s nothing more to add to that.

>>As a ship, Unpopular Opinion: one could argue that they can be shipped, because:

A) He becomes her maker, which changes their relationship to him being more of the “parent.”

– During the initial phase of Lestat turning Gabrielle in TVL, as he’s taking her life, he says she’s no longer his mother (to be fair, this is the kind of intimacy a vampire feels when feeding on anyone, but still, worth mentioning):

My
knowledge dimmed and flickered and there was no mother anymore,
no petty need and petty terror; she was simply who she was. She was
Gabrielle.

– Then, once she’s turned, she insists on being called by her name instead of “Mother,” so some take that as proof that she doesn’t see herself as being his mother anymore, in the mortal sense of the word.

B) The act of making a vampire is extremely intimate, it has been compared to childbirth. It’s the most intimate act a vampire can share with anyone. I believe in fanon that it creates a physiological bond between maker and fledgling, so one could extrapolate to say that the act itself could create a ship.

Note: In most maker/fledgling relationships, there is some assumption that turning the fledgling is done to bind maker and fledgling as a ship; essentially making the fledgling into a companion for the maker and the maker into a companion for the fledgling. In this case, Lestat turned Gabrielle in order to save her life, not knowing if he would even survive the act, so I don’t think this was a factor here, neither of them necessarily intending to be in a relationship together, but the physiological bond discussed above would still be a possibility.

Also worth mentioning is that he asks for her consent, as he had not been asked for consent himself, and the question is very clear:

No words again, just the silent thrust of it, and the question, more immense than could ever be put into words, Do you want to come with me now? DO YOU WANT TO COME WITH ME INTO THIS NOW? I hide nothing from you, not my ignorance, not my fear, not the simple terror that if I try I might fail. I do not even know if it is mine to give more than once, or what is the price of giving it, but I will risk this for you, and we will discover it together, whatever the mystery and the terror, just as I’ve discovered alone all else. With her whole
being she said Yes.

^This could be construed as him wanting her for a companion and her agreeing to it.

C) LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX. This is a point of debate for many fans, whether the Ricean vampires can have penetrative sex. In my opinion, in canon they cannot, and while penetrative sex is NOT A REQUIREMENT to a relationship (there are relationships where there is no penetrative sex and they are no less valid than those which do have it, in my opinion), the incestuous aspect of a Lestat/Gabrielle ship is alot less squicky for me knowing that they aren’t able to literally bone in the mortal way. Some would argue that the bloodsharing is more intimate than penetrative sex, and that’s fine, but still, being unable to literally bone is just so much less squicky, in my opinion. But ppl made fanart of essentially that and it was still very funny, to me!

Call it what you will, but the first bloodkiss shared in canon is between Lestat and Gabrielle on the night she is turned.

^^^ALL THAT SAID, I wouldn’t shoot anyone down who ships it, they are both adult fictional characters. One could argue that there is some canon evidence to support it, but canon evidence is unnecessary.

Again, Anon, do what you and your partner are comfortable doing. If RPing it as a ship squicks you both out, don’t do it. If Rping it as a ship is exciting to you both and you want to explore that taboo, go for it! Just be sure to tag it with the right warnings, and add cuts so that ppl will be protected from content they may not want to see. You can also RP privately however you like, there is no rule that says RP must be done publicly.

If your RP partner is pressuring you to RP something you are uncomfortable with, then I would suggest not RPing with them, and similarly, if you are pressuring your RP partner to RP something they are uncomfortable with, I would suggest not pressuring them into it.

Lestat “A Child Will Fix My Marriage” de Lioncourt

Well, you’re not wrong…

(Digging up an oldie from the archive, wow, this one is almost 4 yrs old, can you believe I’ve been on here over 4 yrs! *keanu reeves voice* woahhh)

Some thoughts on this under the cut, cut for length.

It is, admittedly, always fun to deride Lestat for this

screwup

decision when Marius (for all his own f*cked-upedness, he does have a little decent advice to give at various points) specifically told him: DO. NOT. TURN CHILDREN. INTO VAMPIRES. EXCEEDINGLY NOT COOL.

In TVL, Lestat says he wanted to do it just because he wanted to see what would happen:

image

^I don’t think this is the reason (or at least not the MAIN reason), I think this is Lestat’s bravado, and knowing that he’s writing the book FOR LOUIS, really, knowing Louis is going to be reading it, and this is the answer he’s putting out there to make himself look that much more callous, bc the real answer is too painful to share.

Someone (she’s not on tumblr, I’d tag her if she was) once suggested that Lestat made Claudia to keep Louis’ conscience clear; after all, Lestat is essentially ‘saving’ her from death. The line in the movie is, “Your conscience is clear.” If Louis had actually killed a child (a Holy Innocent!) that night, it would have been the worst crime he’d committed in vampiring, and Lestat didn’t want Louis to bear that burden of guilt. Louis might have even felt guilty enough to kill himself over it, also something Lestat did not want to happen.

So I think Lestat would prefer that Louis think of this as just another gross, horrible act to add to the list of gross, horrible things Lestat has done, and he’d prefer that we write him off as an antagonist, which is easier than being confronted with what he does and why he does it.

I know it’s a bit of a reach, but I feel like Lestat admitting that he made a child into a vampire, knowing it was a crime against nature, and condemning her to the body she was turned in, was a sacrifice he made to prevent Louis from bearing the guilt of her death, it’s all too painful, and could invite questions about it, and he just can’t let anyone in that close.

I understand that it’s a very problematic book, but this is also why I can’t throw the entirety of TOBT out, because Claudia comes back to haunt Lestat to confront him with the decision of turning her. He reflects on it off and on throughout the book and finally admits that even knowing what he knows now, he would still do it all over again, and that’s taking into account the joy they all experienced as a little family, but also the pain and suffering she felt as she became aware of the trap of her own body.

When vampires suck dick do they have to resist the urge todo drain the blood from the dick ???? (random question . i see over there )

Hey it’s a valid question, I getcha >;} I’ve thought about it, too!

image

[^X a piece of my commissioned art drawn by the awesomeness that is @riwox, and there is a panel in it w/ oral action, but it’s just licking.]

Look at this comic that @remarried did, too, btw, along these lines, which I can’t bear to chop even a piece out of bc it has to be seen in FULL to be enjoyed!

IDK about other vampires but as far as VC goes, vampire dicks don’t get erect (there is alot of debate about this)(and I love writing/reading fanfic and seeing fanart in which their dicks DO work!)(but in canon, from my reading, I would say that they do not) so it’s kind of a moot point. But I do think they would still involve it in intimacy if they wanted to. See this post by @amadeo-child-of-the-renaissance w/ comments from @gairid. #Your headcanon may vary on this.

IN CANON: I don’t think that either vampire/vampire or vampire/mortal blowjobs are addressed in canon. I believe that anything that can be bitten can be an erogenous zone, and would enjoy being bitten anywhere, and they could bite mortal’s boners. Now I have this image of a dick just deflating on being drained of blood lol…

How is there very much space in the mouth with those fangs there, tho? Especially if you buy that they may have other sharpened teeth than just the canines. Can they even take a dick in their mouths w/o cutting it? It’s fun to read in fanfic, but would there really be enough space for it? I’m not sure!

I would think that vampires would be limited in their blowjob abilities, unless the vampire’s mouth is big and/or the dick in question is relatively smaller XD

TL;DR: I do think vampires have to resist the urge to suck all the blood out of a dick during a blowjob, if they want that dick to keep working.

@thebibliosphere, help me out?

An anon response re: Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis: “can I skip Kapetria’s Tale and still understand the rest of the book?”

image

^Kitty by @berrym [X]

TL:DR; Anon says don’t skip it, you should read it.

I’m of the mindset that there’s something good in all the VC books even if you don’t accept them all as canon, there’s always something worth dragging out into the light and enjoying for what it is as a standalone piece, be it a quote, or good dialogue banter, or whatever floats your boat, and you may miss it if you skip over a whole section… Even if the characters aren’t our faves, there may be something in there that’s worth salvaging. @sanguinivora gave me a new diving suit for this purpose, lol.

ANYWAY so Anon wrote in 4 messages:

1) To your PLROA question: It’s true, in a way 95% of KT could be skipped. Anne Rice told it so boringly, mentioning every detail (every time they ate and what they ate) it did not even have a chance to be interesting as a story (for me it was though also too absurd).

Good to know. I mean, the vampires can’t eat food, maybe this was an attempt to make the replimoids more likeable? That they’re all impressed with the earhtly food and stuff? So her tale was interesting and absurd tho, that’s the impression I’m getting.

2) But still I don’t think that the end of the book will make actually sense if one knows not the facts one hears in KT. You know the outcome, yes, but probably not really why or how it came to be. So my advice is to read that part simply incredible fast, not trying to imagine every single detail.

Sounds like good advice. I’ll be interested to see what info does apply.

3) Otherwise I find it in a way sad that AR steals every secret. In IWTV we know NOTHING of vampires – which makes that book so strong. Then in TVL we hear the tale of the parents, which gave me chills still. But this book goes for me too far.

If I understand you right, you liked that we didn’t know the vampire origins in IWTV, and then in TVL those origins are discussed and you did enjoy that. I agree, it seems like most VC fandom ppl I’ve talked with love VC partly for its take on the vampire origin myth. I BOUGHT IT THEN AND I BUY IT NOW. And AR even leaves the possibility that there are other vampire-like beings that have a different origin story, like the mindless Eurovamps Louis and Claudia find. They doubt that those vampires were created the way they were, but it’s left unexplained.

But this book goes for me too far.

That seems to be shared by other fans, too, that she undermines the facts set up in earlier books, rather than adding to them in a richer way :-

4th message from anon has kind of a big spoiler, so it is under the cut.

4) That all the vampires are separated in the end, takes a LOT of the vampire “magic” and makes so much of the old novels in a way undone. I would never read it a second time and I will also not regard it actually as VC truth.

Yeah I agree with you, one of the things I really loved about the vampire physiology of Ricean vampires was the fact that they were all connected, and to have that severed, it just felt like a huge loss of the vampire “magic” as you put it. Amel could travel around on it and visit other vampires! It was like they really were all one creature in a way.

I would reread PLROA more for those domestic and angsty moments we get of the vampire court, Lestat squabbling with Amel in his head, the L/L fluff, of course. But for the ALIEMS? No thank you, I really hope she moves on to literally anything else… I would even accept a wurwulf/VC crossover at this point, as it would be more grounded in the universe she had previously built.

Have you read Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis? If so, can I skip Kapetria’s Tale and still understand the rest of the book? Her story is SO boring and its been holding me back from finishing the book for weeks.

FUNNILY ENOUGH!!1!

image

… i, too, am unable to finish PLROA for MONTHS bc of Kapetria’s Tale! FOR THE SAME REASONS. I mean maybe it’s not boring to some ppl? But for me, I’m just… I was weirded out before by the Replimoids and getting to her tale I just didn’t want to buy more of what was being sold.

So I have been really struggling to pick it up again EVEN THO IT IS RIGHT ON MY DESK IN PLAIN VIEW, mocking me every day that I don’t just CRACK IT OPEN AND TAKE MY MEDICINE like I should if I really cared about this series (which I clearly do).

I went and asked around & skimmed ahead bc I very much like to be spoiled, and I won’t spoil you here, but from what I skimmed and from what I’ve been told, I don’t think you need to know Kapetria’s Tale to understand the rest of the book. It goes back to our vampires and their shenanigans and SCIENCE, and in the old days we might have called this all very “cracky” stuff, but the ending might even have been written before the Atlantis portion was added in, it seems to depend so little on it, but again, that’s from my spoilage.

…But currently? What are ppl’s thoughts on how PLROA ends? I would like ppl to speak freely, so there may be spoilers in comments/reblogs.

Message me privately, if you prefer, and I’ll add it to this post under a cut if it’s spoilery.

Elaborating on your last post about fake fangs, what do you know about fangsmiths? Are those fangs durable? I’m just so curious because they sound awesome!

Hello! I am actually… really passionate about this and I’ve thought about doing it for myself, too! For now I settle with fanart of me w/ fangs…

image

[^Portrait of moi by the amazingly talented @vaciel, it’s a WIP, I hope they finish it someday][Ya can’t see them but I would have the canine fangs, too, you can only see the

lateral incisor fangs here

(that’s the tooth between the

front tooth and the canine)]

I actually don’t know the specifics, it depends on the fangsmith, but we have a few

fangsmiths

brought into Halloween Adventure here in NYC leading up to Halloween every year to make fangs, so you might get in touch with that store. They would probably need to be done in person so that the fangsmith can take a cast of your teeth so that their fangs will fit perfectly (my little story about the custom fangs, well, Lestat sneakily gets the cast by making the molds himself w/ Brian, during an evening of experimentation with Alginate ^____^ ) I’m pretty sure the fangsmiths all make their fangs removable.

One fangsmith, who I think is one of the Halloween Adventure ones, is Father Sebastiaan, and he has a gallery and prices. He has a list of pointers about his fangs that are probably true for other fangsmiths:

  • “Fangs color match your teeth.
  • They will last 2-3 years with good care, longer if you are careful.
  • Not wise to sleep or eat with them.
  • OK for smoking, drinking coffee, tea, alcohol, absinthe and sex.
  • Made from high quality dental acrylics.
  • 18 years of fang making experience.
  • Good for singing.
  • Feel like your real teeth when being worn.”

This is one of the customers in his gallery:

^IWTV-style fangs, I think, bc this dude vampire has the lateral incisors done, too ❤

Hit the jump for a little more, anyone w/ more info is welcome to share or tag someone who does!

I’ve also seen my fair share of custom fangs made by dentists who are willing to do cosmetic work, like the plastic surgeons who are willing to make your ears pointy for superficial reasons. Much more expensive, I would assume. Here’s a picture of a fan at a booksigning for PL in ‘14 who I think had permanent fangs and hers were… in my opinion… too big. She reminded me a little more of a sabretooth tiger than a vampiress but hey! It worked for her.

image

[X] Sorry for the low-res, it was hard to get any snaps of her! Her fangs were concealed when her mouth was closed, but her lip was pushed out to make room, I guess, and I think she had a little difficulty talking. Hers seemed very durable.

Do you have any favourite or well written vc fics? I keep only finding younger audience’s writing or things that aren’t to my taste

Hm, I mean, I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, I can see where you’re coming from… sometimes I’ll start reading a fic from a new writer and feel like they might not have read very much canon, or they’ve only seen the movie(s), so they don’t really have a take on the characters that meshes well enough with mine, so it makes it a little hard for me to suspend disbelief, but other times, I’m really impressed with their ideas! It’s pretty subjective but I like to be surprised *u*

image

^Kitty by @berrym [X

For specifics, it depends what you’re looking for, which characters, pairings, time period, longfic/one-shots/drabbles, angst, fluff. So many!

I have a huge list of faves. HUGE. But the thing about VC fanfic is that we still have to be sort of careful about sharing it bc of reasons (under the cut).

Also, the danger of recommending any fic runs the same risk of doing those Follow Forever posts, which I don’t do, because I’ve seen ppl who were left out feel hurt and excluded. I like fluff and angst, and I ship L/L so most of my faves are L/L specific, and I also really love one-shots from the IWTV-era and TVL-era, and other “missing scenes” from canon books 3-5 and #current vampire happenings which could take place anywhere from 1986 to now. There are alot of good fics that don’t fall into those rubrics, which are very subjective, so ppl are free to reblog/comment with other stuff.

One of my most fave VC fanfics is an L/L-specific one, it’s incomplete but I recommend it whenever I have the opportunity: Gulfport: A British Petroleum Fanfic (Part One) by hw_campbell_jnr – There are 2 parts and, again, it’s incomplete, but this is devastatingly beautiful long!fic. Hipster modern Lestat and Louis, Lestat going by a pseudonym, politics woven in, it’s just too good. It annoys me how good it is. I am annoyed. I would be less annoyed if it were COMPLETED.

Since I’m on the GULFPORT (in caps bc I am just that passionate about it) subject I’ll elaborate a little. Not a lot happens plot-wise, but this is the kind of angst and fluff I really love. It offers an insight into their characters that hits me just right, I haven’t seen anything quite like it. It plays forwards and backwards in the established timeline, Lestat makes these strong statements and then immediately backtracks and scratches them out, harshly, it’s more of a train of thought sometimes than a narrative, it sprinkles in some headcanons, a peek into L/L email exchanges, and a little of Lestat’s recovery from his coma which just… really hurt my heart, in such a good way. It basically killed my muse for any creative fanworks for months after I first read it, bc I felt like, Why bother, if this exists? BC we always need more fanworks, we’re insatiable, fanworks are the lifeblood of a fandom, and even the person who wrote GULFPORT enjoys other’s fresh fanworks 😉

ANYWAY. We all know that there is fic in secret places and I don’t broadcast those places on my blog, in case certain ppl change their mind about their stance on it. However! Archive of Our Own (aka AO3) has a mission statement about protecting fanworks from copyright infringement arguments, so I feel pretty safe recc’ing stuff that’s on there (in no special order):

Anyone is welcome to reblog/comment with recs!

Hit the jump for a teensy fanfic history lesson.

In short, Anne Rice had waged war on VC fanfic in the mid-90s, sic’ing her lawyers on many fanfic writers, eventually breaking apart fanfic sites (“speculative fiction” or “spec” archives/communities) and driving many of these writers to stop writing altogether or do so in a more underground way ;A;

Currently, she’s had conflicting stances on fanfic, but hasn’t made outright war at nearly that level. I try not to tag her in discussions of it, basically, I don’t try to provoke her by making our caches of VC fanfic known. Especially on Facebook, where she’s very active and might see it. She posted this on her FB in 2014 (I think):

image

Vadim Shatilov as Louis (with green contact lenses, ofc) what do you think?

Hmmm… I can see why you might suggest this person, there’s definitely an otherworldly presence there, subtly androgynous features.

(I’m not going to add here that

Shatilov “has the perf hair zomg!” bc there’s debate about Louis’ hair, and I enjoy both options separately, the fanon: long and silky like Shatilov here; and the more canon: short and wavy/full like Ezra Miller. There are even more variations of headcanons about his hair than these two but I think they’re the two main options.)

image

And Louis is supposed to be slender…

image

^Idk, for my headcanon, Louis is slender but muscled, too. He’s a fighter! He was living a pretty unhealthy lifestyle, and ppl tried to bleed out his mortal madness twice (or more times), he’d need to be a somewhat sturdy to withstand all that. Anyway, Shatilov

could be a young Louis, a teenage Louis maybe!

Look at this cute smile:

image

Hey there! Not sure if you’ve already talked about this, but I was wondering what you think about Lestat’s singing voice? I personally always thought of him as having an almost Bowie sounding voice but with the energy and range of Brendon Urie from Panic at the disco. Idk if you’ve heard the song Emperor’s New Clothes by Panic! but that song is kinda how I think Lestat would sound- I think he’d have a kick ass falsetto voice. Also Ave Cesaria by Stromae is a good example in terms of French music

Hello hello~~~ This post got very long! It’s a big question!

I guess I haven’t talked about Lestat’s singing voice bc I can’t find it, but YES, #headcanon accepted, Lestat would have a kick ass falsetto voice!

I just drafted this post and it’s too long, so much more can be written and more vids could have been featured, but I’ve spen

The short answer: As with Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is music in the ear of the beholder, and your idea of Lestat’s voice is as valid as anyone else’s. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

I’m gonna offer a few responses on this, from AR, from canon, from a mutual VC fan friend of mine, and then respond to your suggestions. I had to make a cut bc the post was getting long.

SO, AR has said, on several occasions, that Bon Jovi was a big influence on Prince Lestat. She even dedicated Prince Lestat to Bon Jovi (as one of her muses). [X]

image

image

I also seem to recall Lestat mentioning a love for Bruce Springsteen in canon, but that might have been fanon. In QOTD, Baby Jenks says Lestat sings like the Boss:

Baby Jenks did love the Vampire Lestat’s music,… Yes sir, that was the one she loved… It wasn’t the words that got to her, it was the way he sang it, groaning like Bruce Springsteen into the mike and making it just break your heart.

I’m on Fire, the lyrics and the way he sings it, seem very Lestatuesque to me. Try Dancing in the Dark, also very Lestatuesque to me…

Thanks @sanguinivora for linking me to this Vulture interview (12/1/2010)! AR answers the question:

What do you think Lestat’s band would sound like now?

Well, it always sounded to me like Jim Morrison. That was the band I based it on — Jim Morrison’s voice, physical beauty, and the sound of that band in a song like “L.A. Woman.” That’s how I imagined Lestat’s band sounding. I don’t know a lot about rock music right at this moment; I haven’t listened to a stadium band in a while. I don’t know the latest stuff. I really don’t know. The main thing in emphasizing Morrison is that I’m emphasizing hard rock. It’s really acid rock. It’s not lightweight rock music and there has to be a good voice at the helm. Morrison had an exceptionally good voice for a rock singer. But modernizing it? Sure, whatever. Bring it on.

@artisticfreedomofexpression, do you have a Jim Morrison song you think is really Lestatuesque?

AR also sort of answered this in response to her Fan Questions for Lestat series on FB, I’ll post the whole response momentarily, but here’s a relevant snippet:

“Of course I am enchanted by popular music of all kinds — Jim Morrison, Tina Turner, Bon Jovi, Joan Jett. I find myself highly susceptible to the most emotional and intense music.” [X10/12/15]

@liquorandptsdvarietyshow, VC fandom friend of mine, had commented on a post re: Bon Jovi:

1) Lestat has pretty schlocky taste in music, all things considered. Yes he is a musician and a rock star but basically he likes anything you can dance to;

2) Bon Jovi are tbh pretty cool. I’m not saying rush out and buy all their albums, but Slippery When Wet is a good time with a gross title.

Personally, I’ve always felt Brett Scallions of FUEL would have done well as Lestat, and Last Time feels very Lestat/Akasha to me.

ANYWAY. Anon’s suggestions!:

I personally always thought of him as having an almost Bowie sounding voice

*nods* I think that’s possible, but subtract the British accent. I bet Lestat could emulate it easily, though.

but with the energy and range of Brendon Urie from Panic at the disco. Idk if you’ve heard the song Emperor’s New Clothes by Panic!

I’m not a Panic! fan, I’m still stuck in my love for 80′s + 90′s music, but listening to this song now, first of all, yeah, I hear some Bowie in Urie! And there’s a lot of charm and silliness, but it’s all grounded in real feeling, IDK, you may be starting to turn me into a Panic! fan, Anon!

^I also really like the sass in the lead singer, and the lyrics are pretty Lestatuesque!

Ave Cesaria by Stromae – Well, it is a nice song, but something about the singer’s voice seems smoother and older to me? Not really snazzy and cheesy enough? Like this is how David might sing if David was a singer. Nice example for French music, tho!
