Belated gift for @garama!! Who wanted Christmas sweaters! šŸ˜€Ā

For @auburnandamberangel!!

Daniel got his immortal companion an Atari and he’s been hooked for hours without moving. While he has the chance Daniel decides to do a bit of decorating- Armand didn’t let him put a single ornament on the meticulously designed tree he had brought in, after all.Ā

Honestly, anyone in winter fashion is so immediately endearing. I love using pictures as desktops and phone backgrounds so image manips or fanart of this kind of theme would be excellent.

Well I hope this makes a good wallpaper! We’ve got the gang in winter gear circa post-QTOD, having a romp in the snow in Paris (or wherever!)… who’s responsible for crashing the boy’s sled is up for debate okay fine it’s Lestat, but to be fair, Daniel was probably messing with his concentration… Gabrielle is a much safer sled-driver, hence Louis rides with her ;D

They’re not sledding in daylight, there’s just really powerful lighting on the mountain. REALLY powerful.

  • Lestat – Martin Rolinski
  • Daniel – River Phoenix
  • Armand – Bjorn Andresen
  • Gabrielle – Michelle Pfeiffer
  • Louis – Brad Pitt

Am I the only one that totally saw Armand just like Yurio (Plisetsky)? Both smol cynical RUSSIAN teenagers with issues/angst. (Familiar???) Longer hair, angelic, sometimes cruel but at the same time you can’t help but love them.

Indeed, I had that thought, too! The resemblance is uncanny…

I’m sure someone could write up a more elaborate comparison of these two, but I’m drained, can’t do it. Anyone is welcome to reblog/comment on this!

Do you think Marius was jelous when Armand was hooking up with that english lord? Because I think he was, which is curious because he didn’t have a problem with him fooling around with the half of Venice

Marius is one of our more Problematicā„¢

characters in canon, so take every discussion about him and his treatment of Armand/Amadeo with a huge truckload of salt and patience, bc there are some strong opinions out there.

Marius knew about Armand (known then as ā€œAmadeoā€) and Lord Harlech. He might have been jealous, but didn’t say so in TVA, only that he was worried for Amadeo’s safety:

ā€œHeĀ has quite the reputation, your English lord, slamming down his knife on the board inĀ any tavern he chooses. Do you have to consort with common murderers? You have aĀ nonpareil here when it comes to those who take life.ā€

@auburnandamberangel, @sheepskeleton,Ā @amadeo-child-of-the-renaissance,Ā @faceofabotticelliangel, @annabellioncourt,Ā @vraik, andĀ @anton-mordrid would all probably have better answers for this… anyone is invited to reblog/comment and add their thoughts.

The main difference I see is that Marius gave Amadeo the autonomy and independence to make his own choices in this regard, and Amadeo was more rebelling against Marius in his fling w/ Lord Harlech than furthering his sexcapades education. It turned out that LH was bonkers,Ā got all weird and overly possessive and wanted to kidnap Amadeo… it was a bad breakup.

[X, @cloudsinvenice said: I’m thinking Armand when he fights Lord Harlech, personally.]

There’s some debate about why Marius sent Amadeo around for all those sexual escapades and I always read it as part of Marius’ full-rounded education deal that he wanted Amadeo to have; to have experienced all the good things in life that can be humanly experienced, and to show him that physical intimacy doesn’t have to be the horrible experience it was when Amadeo was kept in the brothels. Not necessarily the best cure for a sexually abused child/teenager but Marius was probably thinking of it asĀ exposure therapy:

Exposure therapy is a technique in behavior therapy used to treat anxiety disorders. It involves the exposure of the patient to the feared object or context without any danger, in order to overcome their anxiety and/or distress. Procedurally it is similar to the fear extinction paradigm in rodent work.Ā

Hey Lestat! Do you or any of the VC vampires like snow? By the way this is coming from a person who lives in Minnesota and recently has it’s first major snowfall. Not sure how many inches we got but it’s a lot.

(@thelionscrimsonclaws wrote a gr8 response to a similar ask about snow, very poetic, very touching <3)

ā™›Minnesota, hm? We do travel to places to ski and romp in the piles of white stuff that we wouldn’t get in New Orleans. Might have to go there next…

We love lounging in a cozy cabin to watch the snow fall outside the windows… nothing quite like the inner peace and contemplation snowfall can bring.Ā

Yes, we love snow. Most of us aren’t bothered by the cold. Louis is, and he will allow me to bundle him in enough layers so he can ski with us, or build snowmen and igloos. However, when he’s warm enough from a fresh kill, he just might strip off enough layers to regain flexibility of movement, he is a masterful snowball assassin, slinking around the forest like a ninja!Ā

I call Armand ā€œPanchinoā€ sometimes and he doesn’t know why…

HEY. HEY. YOU KNOW WHO I LOVE?Ā

Antonio Banderas Armand.Ā

I ranted about this at length once, and realized it might be worth excising that particular section from my recaps and letting it stand on its own.Ā

SO LET ME TELL YOU A THING.

ā€œNot only does Banderas give one hell of a performance, clearly entranced by Louis and convinced his ruthlessness is an acceptable means to an end (and then Louis dumps him immediately and Banderas’ crushed look that WHOOPS OVERESTIMATED just destroyed me). It’s really genuine, maybe the movie’s best after Cruise and Dunst, and at least half his dialogue is lifted without change from the books. But all that gets overlooked, because he doesn’t look like a teenager. And there’s a certain fairness to that – Armand’s body adds a dimension to his interactions with others as much as Claudia’s does. But now let me give you a hot dose of context.

In 1994, it was still a pretty common argument to conflate homosexuality with pedophilia, particularly with gay men. Ā THINK OF THE CHILDREN, Y’ALL. The movie already had to deal with the Claudia/Louis relationship, which only tenuously steps the worst landmines of creepiness, as we discussed, by avoiding physicality and giving mentally grown Claudia all the power. So, the filmmakers maybe didn’t want to stack, on top of that stack of gunpowder, a relationship with yet another underage character, particularly one that so played into existing stereotypes.

Then there’s the fact that, by virtue of the script, Louis’ feelings for Armand are a lot more explicitly tender and obvious than his relationship with Lestat. Back then, it was a big deal if you asked an actor to, gasp, play gay. Heavens forfend. But Banderas, in addition to being a handsome fellow and a marketable star, had also appeared in Philadelphia in 1993 (aka the movie where the Noble Gay dying nobly from AIDS is nice enough to teach A Straight to be a better person before he croaks). While their scenes were scrubbed of basically any intimacy, he was playing Tom Hanks’ lover, and apparently that was proximal enough to The Gay that he was an okay dude to ask. And then he fucking killed it with the material he was given it, in spite of the fact that the majority of his scenes were opposite the totally catatonic Pitt (who has made no bones about how much he haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaated being in this movie). He’s a champ, and a treasure, come at me.

The part of me that loves this movie as its own movie is so into Antonio, too. The reasons you stated are part of it, but as an aesthetic decision as well I really love him as this like Dark Exotic European Vampire. It works as a jarring contrast to the world Louis had lived in with Lestat, and even as a movie ploy it’s such a dynamic visual. And goddamnit his gold eyes flashing in the firelight. He’s just a real VAMPIREY VAMPIRE. It’s obviously a departure from the novel but it works so well on its own.Ā

I also think it works because the movie was never a series. If we’d gotten into the other stories it would’ve started mangling Armand’s character too much, but we don’t get to know him very personally here so it’s fine.Ā

The scenes with Armand are my favorite in the whole movie. They feel so magnetic to me, and I appreciate more than I can ever explain that they gave that much screen time to these conversations. It nails the tone of the novels so well and is so so so important to keep.Ā

I’m gonna cry! Thank you @vraik, for articulating this so thoroughly and adding so much more to my dusty old #Defending Antonio tag. It was most likely a deliberate choice to diverge from canon on Armand’s appearance, but much of the character is still preserved and shines through Antonio’s performance.

And @monstersinthecosmos makes an excellent point about how great his scenes are and what Antonio does bring to the table physically. His Tall Dark Exotic European look is in direct contrast with Lestat, who looks like Blonde Ambition Barbie in comparison.

Can we all keep this in mind for the upcoming adaptations? Whoever is cast, please give them a chance to do their jobs, which is ACTING. Even if the character does not fit your headcanon remotely. Let’s be considerate and keep in mind that some things are possible to explore in fiction that cannot yet, if ever, be shown in film/TV.
