fandoms you’re in now?

Confession time: I don’t consider myself really ~in~ any other fandom. Just Vampire Chronicles.

I don’t think I have enough depth of knowledge* of other media to consider myself a real part of their fandoms, but I like other media, obviously, and I sometimes reblog it here under #Not VC along with other Not VC things. #VC Adjacent is for things that are evocative of a VC feel, even if only in the remotest way!

Admittedly, my standards are VERY high re: “depth of knowledge,” but the amount I do know about others might qualify me as being considered “in” some other fandoms. What even qualifies you to be IN a fandom? Just liking a thing? Or having headcanons about it? Enjoying discourse about it? IDK.

Hello! :) So I’m /very/ new to the VC fanbase and I was wondering, are there any vampires whom are PoC? If not, have you ever imagined what they looked like? Usually one describes vampires as having porcelain white skin, very pale, but if vampires really exist, then there has got be at least one vampire out there who is a person of color, right?

Welcome! Get ready for a Wall of Text™!

The short answer is: Yes, there are PoC vampires in VC (”VoC,” right? Vampires of Color?). There aren’t many in the recurring character cast but they’re in the series! Here’s one in

Queen of the Damned:

“Davis was a black Dead guy and one damned good-looking black Dead guy,… His skin had a gold glow to it, the Dead glow which in the case of white Dead guys made them look like they were standing in a fluorescent light all the time.”

Have I ever imagined what they looked like? I think that was a pretty good description, because other than the “gold glow,” I would describe a PoC vampire like I would a PoC person, with the features that they have!

image

[^X] Akasha is an Egyptian VoC, described in the novels as having porcelain white skin, and this is a point of contention in the VC fandom, that AR has whitewashed her. I don’t have a stand on this but I very much like the way that it was handled in movie!QOTD.

It’s worth noting that there is a debate as to what color the Ancient Egyptians’ skin really was, and I added a bit from 2 articles under the cut which might be of interest to you.

Akasha is also very old, and Ricean vampire physiology involves the lightening of the skin over time. This is another point of contention in the VC fandom, again, it appears on the surface to be AR whitewashing a PoC.

I would suggest that the draining of pigmentation is due to the lack of exposure to sunlight, as we can see in examples in nature of subterranean animals who have evolved over time to be light-colored

image

^LOOKIT THIS CUTIE A Namib desert golden mole [X]

From Wiki:

Subterranean fauna are animals that have adapted to live underground… troglofauna are associated with caves and spaces above the water table … Adaptations to the subterranean environment include a heightened sense of hearing, touch and smell[1]… and loss of under-used or unnecessary senses, apparent in the lack of pigmentation and eyesight of most subterranean fauna.

^So maybe AR drew a little from there. Why a lack of pigmentation? I found an interesting study/article (In the Light of Evolution: Volume IV: The Human Condition) on that, too, which points to the lack of sunlight as the cause:

Observers beginning with Hippocrates in the fifth century associated human traits and temperament with the environment and recognized that skin color was part of this package (Isaac, 2004). The association of dark skin pigmentation with intense sunshine and heat was further developed by Aristotle and his followers as part of a comprehensive “climatic theory,” which related human features, dispositions, and cultures to the environment.

…The evolution of light pigmentation at high latitudes has long been related to the significance of production of vitamin D in the skin under conditions of reduced sunlight (Murray, 1934; Loomis, 1967).

image

^I would suggest that the vampiric parasite is always working on converting its host into a better vampire (and less of a mortal) cell by cell, and the process is accelerated too much by the UV rays in sunlight, which causes their skin to burn. Being unable to tolerate the discomfort, the vampire skin gradually drains of color due to lack of exposure to sunlight.

The rate at which they lose pigmentation and how much pigment is lost varies by individual. It’s also possible that some vampires retain a skin color that is similar to their mortal skin color. It’s not an exact science.

There are also examples of vampire skin becoming darker after surviving exposure to sunlight.

Hope that helped! Hit the jump for stuff about Egyptian skin color.

From an Observation Deck article:

…ancient Egyptians didn’t really perceive themselves as either “black” or “white.” Just look at the above painting from Pharaoh Seti I’s tomb. The top right group, with the palest skin are Libyans (Berbers), the next one over to the left are Nubians, followed by “Asiatics” (Mesopotamians). The bottom central group are Egyptians. By their own perception Egyptians were neither particularly dark nor particularly pale, and given their xenophobic attitude towards outside cultures (which was fairly common for most ancient peoples) they would probably resent being sorted into either “race.”

So why does this matter? Why is it important that we acknowledge the Egyptians don’t fit into our constructed dichotomy of black vs. white, of European or African? Well, for one thing many modern Egyptians find it kind of offensive. Despite their modern self-identification as Arabs, most Egyptians still feel a strong claim to the historical legacy of their ancient forebears and find it pretty annoying when American scholars (and, black or white, it is mostly Americans) try to pigeonhole the pharaohs into one racial category or another for political purposes.

From Wiki:

The race and skin color of Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of the Greek Ptolomaic dynasty of Egypt, established in 323 BCE, has also caused frequent debate.[46] For example, the article Was Cleopatra Black? was published in Ebony magazine in 2012,[47] and an article about Afrocentrism from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch mentions the question, too.[48] Scholars generally identify Cleopatra as of Greek and Persian ancestry, based on fact that her Greek Macedonian family had intermingled with the Persian aristocracy of the time. However, her mother’s identity is uncertain,[49] and that of her paternal grandmother is also not known for certain.[50]

Do you know if that behind the scenes photo (with the make-up team) was from the cut scene of Louis meeting Lestat in Paris? Because if it is I am even angrier that it was cut because that costume and make-up looks fabulous.

Sadly yes, I’m pretty sure that these are the only pics we have of that scene ;A;

^Not sure why he only has one lens in, maybe those light ones made it hard to see? IDK WE MAY NEVER KNOW *cries* But in the novels, it was Armand’s idea to dress Lestat up for this trial, being overly glamorous emphasizes the sharp contrast between the clothes and his physical grossness, since Lestat was always so vain about his appearance ;A;

Sam Claflin as Lestat

phoenifia:

The Vampire Lestat Casting: Sam Claflin as Lestat de Lioncourt

I
was briefly talking with @i-want-my-iwtv yesterday in regards to all
the “excitement” surrounding possible casting choices in the new TVL
film to which I brought up my personal choice for the Brat Prince
himself.

You may recognize Sam Claflin better as Finnick Odair from the Hunger Games
series. In fact, it was Claflin’s portrayal of Finnick which led to me
considering and then later choosing him as Lestat in my fancast, with
many similarities between the two characters.

*Note: my fancast only contains actual actors/actresses- not models or
any other sort of face claim. So, all picks essentially have acting experience
for me to base my choices on.
If I were to choose a face claim, it would have to be Martin
Rowlinski, considering when Lestat visits me in my kinky dreams, he looks like
Martin Rowlinski (there was another dream where he was in a Pride parade
with a bright green fishnet top and rollerblades, but I’ll save that
for another time).

So why Sam Claflin? For starters,
Claflin facial and bodily characters match those of the book’s not just
in detail, but in expression and movement of them as well.

Here’s
Claflin himself rocking the shoulder length blonde hair as Prince William in Snow White and The Huntsman, not
necessarily curly but with some wave to it. Sam Claflin is 5′11″ and 30 years old according to IMDB, so the height is a close match. As for the age, he’s very youthful looking, and age hasn’t stopped Anne in her own choices so, I think it’s fine.
As for the well shaped but
large and animated mouth…well…

These were too great to not include…

Claflin
also has a lot of experience with one particular character type that
will be handy in portraying Lestat, and that is the romantic action
hero
. He might not always be the central character when he takes on this
trope, but Claflin’s character will always be involved in a plot angle
focused on love, beauty, blind bravery, and heroics. A sassy, snarky
attitude may or may not be included alongside that heart of gold (but is
more than not). For good or evil intent, I feel this is a key part of
Lestat’s character, but not the only key part.

Hit the (Read More) for the full explanation…Well? Go on.

^Collected a bunch of these (sorry that they’re all L/L, i should ship other ships more…) in honor of our brand new *~VC Kinkmeme!~* Check it out: http://vckinkmeme.dreamwidth.org/

Hi! Welcome to the VC Kinkmeme. If you have no clue what a kinkmeme is, here. We’ll go on but catch up later, okay?

For those who know, some rules before you ride:

》 You don’t have to request sex or kink. It can be gen, even. But you have to be anonymous.
》 Your fill doesn’t have to be kinky. But you have to be anonymous. Please!
》 Your prompt/fill has to be about Vampire Chronicles.
》 No racist/homophobic/transphobic language. Be good.
》 Don’t be a jerk in general. We’re all here for fun. Anon is an easily exploitable place for rudeness. Be on your best behavior like a grown up.
》 There’s a filtered anon post (stickied) where you can post questions/issues for the mod to see.
》 Have a good time!

Legally, this an 18+ comm. But, it’s anonymous. So. Also in no way, shape, or form are we connected to AR, her books or publisher. Just non-profit, harmless fun.

What do you think of The Prince Lestat? I’ve read really mixed reviews bordering on it being just plain awful. Specifically characters like Viktor

It’s not my fave VC, but not my least fave VC, either. It’s growing on me.

As I answered in a recent Ask re: Merrick, idk, I would always advocate reading the books, as cracky as some of them can be, bc there are always moments that are really great! Single lines worth digging up, some phrasing that hits you #Right in the Feels. Don’t you want to know what happens? You don’t have to agree with it but the ride is always at the very least stimulating… you can always just skim it for plot points if reading it is too much of an investment.

As to whether it’s “just plain awful”? I wouldn’t agree w/ that, bc there are some gems in it that you can’t get anywhere else. At the risk of being redundant, my short answer: I think AR can still capture that old quality we all fell in love with, albeit in slivers. Which is why I can’t disregard any of the books entirely. It’s still hard for me to accept Prince Lestat as canon, I might never, but there are moments and lines of dialogue in it that are SO VERY GOOD. Moments where I’ve had to pause and smile, because it was as if the old Lestat, from IWTV or TVL, actually graced us with his presence, if only for a moment.

… Also I admit I very much dig Lestat’s new accessory ;D

It also has some worthwhile development re: the spirit that basically created vampires in the first place.

Re: Viktor & Co.

[Fanart of some of the main chars in PL by @remarried/@nightislandofficial]

For specifics/headcanons about Viktor, go to @viktor-de-lioncourt (Viktor RPer

who uses Jordan Sörbom as a FC), @antoineandthepiano, and @roselioncourt, all of whom RP new characters from PL (technically Antoine was in IWTV but he has a larger presence in PL so I count him as new) and care way more about them than I am capable of currently.

I didn’t find many of the new characters very engaging, I would bet we’ll get more depth on them in later books, and/or they were created for what I like to call “canon-fodder” so that AR has a bunch of chars to kill in the next book(s), since she can’t kill the core group we all love so much! She tried to kill a few of them and had to bring them back ;]

Spoilers and probably unpopular opinions re: Viktor under the cut. And really I prefer not to make unpopular opinions but sometimes I gotta.

I find Viktor to be a kind of watered-down Twilight knockoff. He seemed to be an answer for all the POTP who had pestered AR for years to give Lestat a biological son… and the romance between him and Rose came off as pretty forced to me, again, a YA couple like in Twilight for fanservice. Not that YA can’t be well done, just that I didn’t really buy AR’s stab at it. Other ppl may have and they are welcome to ship their hearts out!

More here.

Am I the only one who is more worried than happy/excited about a remake of IWTV? What if it’ll be totally wrong (in any possible way)??!!!

You’re not the only one. *hugs*

It could be wrong in EVERY possible way. *hugs* It will definitely be wrong in SOME WAY to SOMEONE bc we all have different headcanons.

BUT, that said, and having cuddled you warmly, it’s just a movie! Your headcanons are yours and you can retreat into fanfic 😉 That’s what I did re: movie!QOTD which I have like 12% care for (and most of that goes to Aaliyah).

I have some faith in Josh Boone as a director and here are some reasons why.

To be clear tho, it’s not a remake. It’s TVL [X]:

image

Just bc the cover of the script had “Interview with the Vampire” as the title for this project, that doesn’t mean he’s redoing that movie.

It’s possible that Josh Boone & Co. don’t want people to confuse this project with the musical!TVL. And IWTV is the more recognizable title to sell it on. They intend to make a trilogy and spinoff series, and in order to do that, they need to at least include some of the first book.

I think @firelight-fading put it really well in their post here, which I will quote some lines from, (I bolded a few things for emphasis):

I think everyone needs to keep in mind that everyone doesn’t share a collective mind- everyone read these books individually so everyone is going to have a different opinion on how certain plot events happened and how certain characters look. Boone is one of those people and he’s the one in control of how this film will look and develop…

#Your headcanon may vary 😉

On that note, just because a new film is coming out doesn’t mean that the values of past productions, like the IWTV movie with Tom Cruise, decrease. You can still enjoy it. You can still view Tom Cruise as the “perfect” Lestat. You can still choose to ignore the new film. What the new film does mean for the fandom is possible growth. Old loves for the books series will be rekindled and people will hopefully return. New fans will emerge who enjoy the film or are curious about the books. Considering Rice has lessened her hold on fanfiction restriction, that means more fanworks will possibly be generated. Lots of good things on the way even if the film is a flop.

So all in all, stay positive, go see the film to support Rice and the series if anything and if you don’t like it then it’s a done deal and you can fall back on other VC-related works. We’ll get through this irregardless.

^We’ll get through this irregardless *hugs*

I’m trying to get together an Armand cosplay and I need help figuring out outfit choices. I’ll be doing a modern Armand and I don’t really know what modern outfit choices that I could use. Can you please help me owo???

Yah sure! First of all: @chrissydeath and @amadeo-child-of-the-renaissance are fab Armand cosplayers/artists and also @sheepskeleton, who has drawn Armand in modern outfits, they’d probably have better suggestions than mine but I WILL TRY.

I’d suggest looking at fanart of Armand, and unfortunately, I don’t have my #fanart collection divided into different characters so I pulled a few memorable ones out for ya here ;D Go ahead and jump in that tag for more, if u dare.

The crucial part of any Armand cosplay is his hair, of course, but everything else is p. much up to you. What would you headcanon he wears? Sometimes he likes to be all decked out in pricey fitted clothes, but he also has a sense of humor, he probably went for all kinds of silliness in the ‘70′s (and he still goes to 70′s themed parties bc of course he does), but I think he’s most comfortable in tight black pants or skinny jeans, a loose t-shirt (Daniel’s probably), and a well-worn light-weather jacket. He looks great in fur for winter, too.

In no special order, some fanart w/ Armand in modern fashion.

Tweets from celebs [X]

Hi there! I was wondering, do you believe Louis and Lestat were basically meant to be? They’ve been through so much and now they’ve finally settled down and it really makes me so happy to see that! :’) Their own developments are really wonderful too!

I think what you’re asking is:

Was it an accident or kismet that Lestat found Louis randomly in a tavern in a sketchy neighborhood in NOLA?

Lestat went there for normal reasons: hunting evildoers as per usual, but it was NOLA bc he was looking for a fresh start in the New World. And Louis was there for also fairly normal – if not kind of upsetting – reasons, too: looking for someone to put him out of his misery, basically.

I would say it was kismet: Lestat was created for Louis, he was originally intended to serve as Louis’ maker, since we are introduced to him that way in the first book. Even Anne Rice didn’t anticipate that Lestat would essentially take the driver’s seat and create the rest of the series.

But it’s important to remember that, because he wouldn’t exist at all without Louis, in the fictional sense, and I think that’s part of what makes him so loyal to Louis in an ongoing way throughout the series. Louis’ rebelliousness as a fledgling and then the precarious but loving peace they shared for decades sets Lestat up for the pining for him forever after, and it’s only recently in the series that it feels like they are explicitly more in mutual love and awe of eachother than ever before.

If we look at it from Lestat’s perspective, which begins before Louis’ story chronologically, that relationship was a huge turning point for him. He lived out that lifetime that Marius told him to do, and for the most part, it was very good for all of them as long as it lasted. Lestat was the provider again, but this time, it was for a family who actually loved him, who he could love back ❤

image

^[Commission for me by the amazingly talented @ashetray]

^So of course I really love this fanart bc I COMMISSIONED IT, I asked for this composition, w/ Lestat in between Louis and his “dinner.” It’s actually based on an iconic moment in Dirty Dancing but anyway… Lestat had alot to teach Louis, and at least in this moment, he was saying, “I’ll bear the moral burden of killing tonight, it’s more important that you get what you need, so you can take it from me… rather than have /junk food/… but we’re not doing this EVERY night…” Also, he likes it when it’s HIS bodice being ripped open by Louis, for a change of pace!

They’ve also been through alot of canon events, terrible betrayals of eachother, generous forgiveness… so much feels. Which is why I can’t throw out entire books, there’s something worth saving in even the most difficult books to accept.

They say that your relationship with someone is established within the first 5 minutes of being with them, and I think those mutual feelings of friction and awe and attraction between them, added to the decades they shared as murder dads, and the other canon things they’ve survived, it’s all added up to keep them tied together, inexplicably. I think they’ve encouraged each other to be better versions of themselves, for the most part.

Hit the jump for moar thoughts.

In the universe of the books themselves, to elaborate a little: both Louis and Lestat were in a bad place when they found eachother. Lestat had a pretty rough first decade as a vampire, had already made and lost two fledglings. He lost them for different reasons but it still had to hurt. He had successfully gotten kicked out of Marius’ house for his usual bad behavior. Paris was no longer that great of a place for him. He had his blind old dad to deal with.

Louis was almost worse off, a lifetime spent as the man of the house, vigorously trying to kill himself by drinking all night and picking fights w/ whoever would fight him, feeling like a huge failure in the eyes of his family for the death of his younger brother.

So when they met and fell for eachother, it was intense, because they filled a void for eachother. Lestat wanted that companion that he thought Louis could be if he worked the magic on him, and Louis was overwhelmed by the attention of this supernatural creature, not just that he was a vampire (which would have been enough on its own!) but that he was LESTAT, with all that bravado and charm.

Add to that that they were both pretty awful to eachother, too, the friction actually adding to their mutual attraction in a way; Louis felt that vampiring was a great way to damn himself (tho he does admit he appreciated the heightened senses), and Lestat had found someone to question his authority ALL THE DAMN TIME.

It’s a very good ship from all angles, as dysfunctional as they both are.
