I gave the vampire’s fear of sunlight a physiological explanation that had to do with the physiological laws that govern a spirit world or a cosmology. The spirit that has taken them over and made them inhuman is too sensitive to sunlight. It can’t thrive in sunlight — it’s simply paralyzed by sunlight, and weakened — and it can’t enliven their flesh. Therefore, the flesh starts to burn, because the flesh is dead anyway. The dark gift of immortality has different effects on different people. That they respond in different ways. Some people are emboldened, and some people are weakened. Some people are crippled by it, and destroyed by it. Other people are made into monsters by it. But the fundamental thing that happens with Louis is that it doesn’t change him. He is a guilt-ridden adult, living in grief over his dead brother, and he becomes a guilt-ridden vampire, living in grief over the fact that he has to take life in order to live. Perhaps it’s a lesson to Lestat that the basic personality doesn’t always change.

Hello! :) So I’m /very/ new to the VC fanbase and I was wondering, are there any vampires whom are PoC? If not, have you ever imagined what they looked like? Usually one describes vampires as having porcelain white skin, very pale, but if vampires really exist, then there has got be at least one vampire out there who is a person of color, right?

Welcome! Get ready for a Wall of Text™!

The short answer is: Yes, there are PoC vampires in VC (”VoC,” right? Vampires of Color?). There aren’t many in the recurring character cast but they’re in the series! Here’s one in

Queen of the Damned:

“Davis was a black Dead guy and one damned good-looking black Dead guy,… His skin had a gold glow to it, the Dead glow which in the case of white Dead guys made them look like they were standing in a fluorescent light all the time.”

Have I ever imagined what they looked like? I think that was a pretty good description, because other than the “gold glow,” I would describe a PoC vampire like I would a PoC person, with the features that they have!

image

[^X] Akasha is an Egyptian VoC, described in the novels as having porcelain white skin, and this is a point of contention in the VC fandom, that AR has whitewashed her. I don’t have a stand on this but I very much like the way that it was handled in movie!QOTD.

It’s worth noting that there is a debate as to what color the Ancient Egyptians’ skin really was, and I added a bit from 2 articles under the cut which might be of interest to you.

Akasha is also very old, and Ricean vampire physiology involves the lightening of the skin over time. This is another point of contention in the VC fandom, again, it appears on the surface to be AR whitewashing a PoC.

I would suggest that the draining of pigmentation is due to the lack of exposure to sunlight, as we can see in examples in nature of subterranean animals who have evolved over time to be light-colored

image

^LOOKIT THIS CUTIE A Namib desert golden mole [X]

From Wiki:

Subterranean fauna are animals that have adapted to live underground… troglofauna are associated with caves and spaces above the water table … Adaptations to the subterranean environment include a heightened sense of hearing, touch and smell[1]… and loss of under-used or unnecessary senses, apparent in the lack of pigmentation and eyesight of most subterranean fauna.

^So maybe AR drew a little from there. Why a lack of pigmentation? I found an interesting study/article (In the Light of Evolution: Volume IV: The Human Condition) on that, too, which points to the lack of sunlight as the cause:

Observers beginning with Hippocrates in the fifth century associated human traits and temperament with the environment and recognized that skin color was part of this package (Isaac, 2004). The association of dark skin pigmentation with intense sunshine and heat was further developed by Aristotle and his followers as part of a comprehensive “climatic theory,” which related human features, dispositions, and cultures to the environment.

…The evolution of light pigmentation at high latitudes has long been related to the significance of production of vitamin D in the skin under conditions of reduced sunlight (Murray, 1934; Loomis, 1967).

image

^I would suggest that the vampiric parasite is always working on converting its host into a better vampire (and less of a mortal) cell by cell, and the process is accelerated too much by the UV rays in sunlight, which causes their skin to burn. Being unable to tolerate the discomfort, the vampire skin gradually drains of color due to lack of exposure to sunlight.

The rate at which they lose pigmentation and how much pigment is lost varies by individual. It’s also possible that some vampires retain a skin color that is similar to their mortal skin color. It’s not an exact science.

There are also examples of vampire skin becoming darker after surviving exposure to sunlight.

Hope that helped! Hit the jump for stuff about Egyptian skin color.

From an Observation Deck article:

…ancient Egyptians didn’t really perceive themselves as either “black” or “white.” Just look at the above painting from Pharaoh Seti I’s tomb. The top right group, with the palest skin are Libyans (Berbers), the next one over to the left are Nubians, followed by “Asiatics” (Mesopotamians). The bottom central group are Egyptians. By their own perception Egyptians were neither particularly dark nor particularly pale, and given their xenophobic attitude towards outside cultures (which was fairly common for most ancient peoples) they would probably resent being sorted into either “race.”

So why does this matter? Why is it important that we acknowledge the Egyptians don’t fit into our constructed dichotomy of black vs. white, of European or African? Well, for one thing many modern Egyptians find it kind of offensive. Despite their modern self-identification as Arabs, most Egyptians still feel a strong claim to the historical legacy of their ancient forebears and find it pretty annoying when American scholars (and, black or white, it is mostly Americans) try to pigeonhole the pharaohs into one racial category or another for political purposes.

From Wiki:

The race and skin color of Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of the Greek Ptolomaic dynasty of Egypt, established in 323 BCE, has also caused frequent debate.[46] For example, the article Was Cleopatra Black? was published in Ebony magazine in 2012,[47] and an article about Afrocentrism from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch mentions the question, too.[48] Scholars generally identify Cleopatra as of Greek and Persian ancestry, based on fact that her Greek Macedonian family had intermingled with the Persian aristocracy of the time. However, her mother’s identity is uncertain,[49] and that of her paternal grandmother is also not known for certain.[50]

How do you think sex would be between Louis and Lestat if they could have sex? ( ͡͡ ° ͜ ʖ ͡ °) ( Also, Sorry for the bad english,, is not my first language )

Naughty little Anon >;} There are two ways to answer this question, the physiological side and the behavioral side (and there is some overlap). Sex is an act of intimacy, and many ppl have different definitions of intimacy, more than just “insert tab A into slot B,” y’know? Some ppl are not stimulated by penetrative sex, or can’t have it for whatever reason. Some ppl are only stimulated that way.

I’m not going to go into the physiological aspect (for example, the length of their refractory period, u can google what that is) or getting too detailed re: specific body positions or toy preferences, bc I don’t think that’s what you’re asking. But several kinks will be addressed generally 😉

(Briefly, physiologically: they would probably be shooting blanks, since the female of the species is unable to carry a child to term. So I would imagine seminal fluid might look similar to the usual fluid, but be tinted pink, since all of their bodily fluids (tears, sweat) have some amount of blood content. And they would be able to swallow it, bc of the blood content, like they can consume tears).

Sex as an act depends on what part of canon we’re talking about, what’s the state of their ship, tons of factors. But most of my answer below works even if you headcanon that the bloodsharing is all they can do.

Basically, they’re both very curious, and willing to try new things, so there’s almost no limit re: sexytiems! It would be intensely hot.

Hit the jump for sexytiems ideas…

Locations are very important to them. Sometimes just their cozy bed right after they wake up, and it’s gentle and slow with alot of cuddling and praise. Sometimes in the confines of a coffin for old-times sake and the spacial restriction. Other times it’s right before dawn and it’s so rough that things (bedding and furniture) get totally destroyed!

They love to do it in public (although sometimes that’s unintentional, just one of those exchanges like, “Shut UP already,” Oh yeah? Make me.” can ignite them), somewhere just off the beaten path, where they could be discovered easily, so they have to try to keep as quiet as possible.

image

^[X] Even more than location are the positions that locations can afford. One of the first times they were intimate was in a tree. It required a lot of balance, but the curve of the trunk and branches added a huge thrill to the experience. Against walls and other structures is always a plus.

Oral action, of course. Bc w/ fangs, anywhere can be an erogenous zone ;D

As far as who’s on top, alot of ppl seem to headcanon that Lestat would mostly be a top or a very bossy bottom. I would bet that they switch, but that Louis will really only bottom for Lestat (or Armand when he was with him!). When Louis bottoms, he is rendered pretty inarticulate at a certain point and that drives Lestat right over the edge!

Language- Typically a lot of teasing and cursing in French, specifically the older French they spoke in the late 18th – early 19th centuries.

They accessorize- Lots of lace, they like to buy each other things to dress up in! Tho, Louis won’t put on the cheerleader outfit that Lestat won from a real NFL cheerleader, so Lestat wears that one.

Sometimes Lestat will deck Louis out in jewels (even putting a ton of diamond barrettes in his hair) and nothing else. Something about Louis wearing only sparkles is a huge turn-on for Lestat.

They play with toys… I think this is pretty self-explanatory. There was an issue re: a haunted dildo (CHECK IT OUT HERE). They also sometimes make their own toys ^u^

Bondage. Definitely. BC reasons. Although they’re both so strong that the bondage device itself has to be respected, or else they’d just break right out of anything. Almost harder to not break these fragile little things like fur-lined cuffs and leather collars.

Sensory deprivation, like blindfolding.

Louis, of course, likes the room lit with candles, and they sometimes play with the melted wax.

Lestat fantasizes about threesomes, and on a few rare occasions, Louis has given in but would never admit that he enjoyed the extra attention (bc of course he was the center of attention!).

Hello, I need the VC fandoms help remembering something. In the IWTV movie, there are the scenes where claudia has dolls and rejects them, and where she cuts her hair and learns it does not grow back. Question: where were these in the books?(1 of 2)

(2 of 2) I remember these scenes somewhere in the books pretty vividly, but I just reread IWTV over again and couldnt find them. Did i dream them being in the books after years of watching the movie?

So actually, I couldn’t remember either, so I just skimmed IWTV, and neither actually happened quite that way in that book. But it’s still sort of canon bc Anne Rice wrote the script, and she was trying to incorporate later canon stuff where she could.

In QOTD, Claudia mentions it in her diary: “Of course, he gave me a doll as usual, the replica of me, which as always wears a duplicate of my newest
dress. To France he sends for these dolls, he wants me to know. And what should I do with it? Play with it
as if I were really a child?…

He has given me thirty such dolls over the years if recollection serves me…

They would crowd me out of my bedroom if I
kept them. But I do not keep them. I burn them, sooner or later. I smash their china faces with the poker. I
watch the fire eat their hair.”

image

[X] In IWTV, Claudia crushes a doll in front of Louis and she talks about being disappointed in baby dolls… she was pretty spoiled by her dads, so I would bet she got them at other times than just her “birthday,” too! Maybe the fanciest ones were received annually.

^The haircut thing is actually something Gabrielle experienced in TVL. She had cut it and the next night it had grown back to its full length it had been when she died:

Her long heavy hair had slipped over
her shoulders again, and exasperated, she took hold of it in both
hands. Then suddenly she made a low hissing sound, and her body
went rigid. She was holding her long tresses and staring at them.

“My God, ” she whispered. And then in a spasm, she let go of her
hair and screamed.

The sound paralyzed me. It sent a flash of white
pain through my head. I had never heard her scream. And she
screamed again as if she were on fire.

“And the only consistent indication that I am not human is my fingernails. It’s the same with all vampires. Our fingernails look like glass. And some people notice that when they don’t notice anything else.” – The Vampire Lestat

Look at this clear gel nail extension effect. It could be a great vampire makeup effect.

Very vampiry glassy, looks great on light or dark skin and against light or dark backgrounds:

Has anyone tried this themselves?

I’m not sure if you’ve talked about Only Lovers Left Alive, but how well do you think Lestat would get along with the characters from that movie. I feel like he’d have a soft spot for Adam (a musician) and Eve (an intellectual), but would maybe have mixed feelings for Ava who is a little reckless.

I looooooved Only Lovers Left Alive! So many similarities to VC, I could write a thesis on it, but those characters were also beautiful in their own story. So many questions about them! I want the backstory on all of them. WHAT HAPPENED IN PARIS 87 YRS AGO?

image

^Bad things happen in Paris in VC, too ;A;

But look at these cuties awwww…  the OLLA vampires’ personalities are totally compatible w/ VC, they seem to be characters first and the vampiring is secondary.

image

The OLLA vampires have different physiological rules from the Ricean vampires, and those rules dictated how they live. For one thing, Adam and Eve have arrangements w/ mortal agents to get clean blood rather than risk taking victims, whose blood could be tainted w/ modern disease or drugs, which OLLA vampires are vulnerable to. So no funtimes hunting evildoers like Lestat :[ They also don’t seem to need to drink as much blood as Ricean vampires do except for Ava bc she’s Claudia.

image

OLLA vampires can also stay awake during the day if they want to but are still highly flammable to sunlight, so they can probably pass as mortal somewhat better than Ricean vampires do. Eve has a sensory gift in which she can “read” the history from touching an object!

You asked about Lestat specifically, but Louis and Adam would totally bond over poetry and literature. Lestat and Eve (and/or Ava!) would go out to dive bars and rock out. Ava’s similarity to Claudia would make her an ideal hunting buddy for Lestat, but her recklessness would definitely irk him when he realizes he can’t reign her in. Ava seems as insatiable as Claudia, and even MORE selfish.

As @hyperbeeb put it so well [X]:

I’ve fully just accepted that [the OLLA vampires are] a part of the VC universe but have managed to stay out of the way of the wacky bullshit that affects the rest of the VC characters (probably due to the powers bestowed on Tilda Swinton from being an alien goddess). But maybe one day they run across Louis and Lestat and become so incredibly grateful that they don’t spend time around these other vampires (even if Lestat and Adam talked about music for like 8 hours and Lestat told Louis for days afterwards that Adam was like him except better… but less pretty don’t be offended Louis)

Some more comparisons bc of reasons:

^Never in the house you naughty girls!

image

^Little sisters to big bro/sis: “We are going to have S O  M U C H fun”

image

^Adam would appeal to Lestat in his similarity to Nicolas, w/ the tortured musician thing and similarity to Louis with his fascinations with things (and he’s a slim brunet w/ a lot of soul like BOTH of them). Adam seems even less interested than Louis in fashion and material possessions, and his home is as disorganized as I would imagine Louis’ would be (Adam has nests of use, w/ items roughly clustered by category). I would hope that Louis takes better care of his stuff, tho. Adam and Louis both considered suicide a very real option but couldn’t do it themselves; fortunately, their loved ones dragged them back from the edge. Nicolas allegedly did suicide in canon, but there is fanon that he’s still undead, kicking around in secret.

image

Eve was definitely like Lestat in her confidence, curiosity for even the smallest things. Fearless, outgoing, very fashionable. Blood popsicles! She also has some positive Marius qualities to her, in that she had been turned a VERY long time ago, and is largely at peace with the way the world changes around her. Lestat would be intrigued by her tactile gift, too.

image

Ava is very Claudia, aged up, more optimistic, her default mood is generally pretty happy, even though it seems like she’s a pro at being kicked out of groups. Her mood can shift quickly, she’s selfish, flashy, silly, impulsive. She might have been turned anywhere from 16-24 yrs old. She even disregards the #No Killing Friends in the House rule! This is probably how Claudia would have been if she had been turned later in life.

Bonus: Adam + Louis eyerolls

A long time ago you were asked how to escape/harm temporarily the vampires. Now how do you think we could escape the mind gift?

(Can you link me back to that answer? With over 7k posts to dig thru and my own inadequate tagging in the beginning I can’t find it :P)

image

[X is Joe Anderson]

Some mortals have a naturally impenetrable psychic wall, good for them! But for the rest of us, here are some options re: mortals vs. a vampire w/ the Mind Gift:

  • Try to envision a wall,
  • or throw up confusing images,
  • or think of your fave Ace of Base song. Anything BUT what you don’t want them peeking at!
  • If said vampire has been captured For Science, and you’re trying to keep them incapacitated, I’d put headphones/earbuds on them and blast something loud and confusing. A mix of industrial machinery and 80′s synth, or Disney songs, anything really catchy.
  • Try to distract them w/ your scintillating conversation?

In all fairness, it’s taxing for them to use their gifts, and they generally do not bother reading minds unless they are checking you out to see if you’re being honest w/ them, or they don’t want to wait on your oral responses.

Plus, most vampires seem to prefer oral communication since it is closer to being mortal, which most of them tend to imitate. They don’t seem to read minds literally, like text in a book, it’s more like gathering images and sounds, and trying to piece them together like a puzzle, when it would be simpler to just ask you about whatever information they’re seeking.

The real question is: What are you afraid they’d discover in yer mind?

Interviews & Rec [X] (3/?)

I hope there wasn’t such a question before. So, about vampire biology, we know that when emacieted person became a vampire (Gabrielle or Mona), they gain mass while transforming but how about fat person? Like, they lose their unhealthy fat and became a thin vampire? Or at least chubby?

There was a similar sort of question before but I don’t mind revisiting questions, sometimes my headcanons have changed, sometimes I consider a different angle on things, as I’m doing now ;]

Short answer: for Ricean vampires, in my opinion, a fat person would not lose their weight and become a thin person. Vampirism might tighten them up a little, but they will have the same body they had before. For ETERNITY.

There are non-Ricean fat vampires, thoHere’s Deacon from What We Do in the Shadows, and while I wouldn’t call him FAT, I wouldn’t call him SLIM either. Nor is he attractive to everyone even tho he thinks he is

image

So the factors involved with making *~chubby~* vampires are:

1. Who the maker chooses. This is based on different factors, but Beauty is typically one of them. In some societies, bigger is beautiful! An “unhealthy” weight by one society’s standards during one time period is desirable in others: [X]

image

^Personally, I prefer Tiziano’s “Venere di Urbino” in its original form, which is clearly the point Italian artist/actress Anna Utopia Giordano was making when she ‘shopped a whole bunch of these classical paintings ;D

Hit the jump for moar.

2. The vampiric parasite’s prime directive is to make its host into an efficient and attractive killing machine for the sake of its own survival. The parasite doesn’t know what society’s current ideal weight is, but it learns everything about the host body it goes into, and tries to enhance that body to suit its own goal (*1).

  • It’s hard to explain why Gabrielle and Mona’s bodies were inflated up to a “healthy” weight (so to speak). I’d say it’s bc the vampiric parasite transforms the insides of its host to more of a spongey material to increase the liquid capacity (*2). That spongey material could end up slightly inflating areas that had withered due to age or malnutrition.

3. Post-turning, the vampire body cannot exercise off any poundage, or gain any weight in the manner that mortals do. They CAN overfeed, and there is one example of that in canon. I can’t think of anywhere that post-turning weight gain is mentioned. Overfeeding will still not create fat as we understand it:

“Glutted with the feast he was, plump and heated with it as she had seldom ever seen an immortal become.” Pandora describing Azim, Queen of the Damned

*1. I think the vampiric parasite (Amel) analyzes the blueprint of the host’s body when it’s installed and it then immediately uninstalls the features it doesn’t need (e.g. internal reproductive organs). It then starts converting all the organic matter of the host body into its own substance to “perfect it” into the pure supernatural killing machine that it wants to be. In that sense, that initial blueprint probably indicates length of hair, beard growth, muscle shape and position, etc., at time of death, and those are elements that the vampiric parasite program respects and wants to maintain as it continues to “update” its host body. The external appearance of the host body will affect its ability to hunt, and thus, preserve itself. It’s in the parasite’s interest for the host to continue to survive so that it can, too.

*2. The human body can only hold a limited amount of liquid, and the volume of blood they drink as fledglings (according to Lestat’s math, and I’m working on another post about that) would far exceed that limit. The fact is that there would be a lot of blood (like at least 2 gallons) that would have nowhere to go unless the insides of the body were more like a sponge and could store more of it than a mortal body can.
